Favourite book? The Edible Woman, Margaret Atwood
Indeed favourite book? The phantom beer
What are you reading? I’m a literary polyamorist, so I’m currently reading Bodies by Susie Orbach, You Took The Last Bus Home: The Poems of Brian Bilston, and A Feather on the Breath of God by Sigrid Nunez.
where do you sleep
Where there is a bed and a decent coffee in the morning.
Where will you be on Wednesday night?
Revs, and sorry every time. Maybe this year I’ll learn.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a micro-influencer on TikTok for a niche but painfully Cambridge audience?
I started making videos in April 2020. I was really angry at how confusing the government’s advice about COVID was for young people, so I pulled out all the stops and started making videos about news and politics, hoping that it might make politics a bit more – clear for students. When I applied to university I wrote all of this down too, but I never realized how close to Cambridge my audience was until I started getting recognition for my personal tips for speaking at refreshment clubs. A humbling experience.
Who is your favorite dictator?
I’m generally not a fan of dictatorships.
What’s the worst joke you’ve heard?
My brother likes to say (repeatedly): “Why did the Uzbek cross the southeast border? To meet his friend in Turkmenistan. To which he followed up with: “This joke isn’t very funny, but it’s geographically accurate.”
I never heard anyone laugh. I’ve heard this “joke” at least eleven times.
Who is your nemesis at Cambridge?
I don’t have them yet, but I’m actively looking for them. Please DM me @rubesacline with your applications. Previous candidates need not apply.
What did you want to be when you grew up (other than a micro-influencer on TikTok for a niche but painful audience in Cambridge)?
It’s not something I ever want to admit, but I was a big theater kid growing up and I was pretty intense with it. My other path would probably be a jazz and musical theater singing teacher or choreographer. I’ve also wanted to be a fashion designer for ages – you can decide based on my Sidge aptitudes if that was ever a smart idea.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Everything I have the opportunity to do, I want to do – if I ever have a Wikipedia page, I want it to have at least eleven completely unrelated sections. That being said, I really want to go into journalism, so go read my stuff The section xx
What will be written on your tombstone?
“Life Could Be So Much Worse”
Any questions? (about us)
How many times did you copy and paste “tiktok micro influencer for a niche but painful Cambridge audience” for the purposes of this interview? Did you spell it every time? Should I consider “micro” a thinly veiled insult?
Where was your last kiss?
On the doorstep of a studio in Shoreditch.
Forget “Revs or Lolas?” Mash or vinyl?
Mash! Terrible club but
University or T*b?
If The section was a van of life University will be his minimum five pound card.
Favorite flavor at Jack’s?
This is potentially the biggest red flag I’ll ever admit, but I literally fell in love with the secret sweet potato and marshmallow flavor they had once like February. I think about it at least twice a week
Tras or Sunak?
It’s like comparing scumbags.
Stayed overnight at UL – what are you reading to keep you busy?
I wouldn’t waste time reading, I’d spend the night looking for the perfect hideout for the UL hide and seek game I’d been gathering participants for since November. I might take a break to read something by Halberstam, I read a bit about mocks last year but never got the chance to read their stuff properly.
College formal with three people (dead or alive) – who do you choose? The teacher will also be present.
Jesus (I have questions), Simone de Beauvoir (she has answers) and my wonderful and sadly deceased grandmother.
If that TikTok-er asked you what song you’re listening to on King’s Parade, what answer do you have prepared? Yes, you will lie. We all would.
Another guy’s jeans from Ashe. Excellent song and will sound great with this slow motion he edited.
The biggest difference between ConversationsWithRuby and Ruby Cline?
With ConversationsWithRuby, I’m really careful about my responsibility – who’s watching, their age, and my potential influence. So I’m really careful about what I say and do. I’ve met people who recognize me from TikTok who are genuinely surprised that I’m drinking or going out, for example. Also, I’m increasingly afraid to tell the online world anything personal, so she and I grow even more distant. I made the mistake of saying online that I had a girlfriend, for example, and then had to deal with ridiculous and intrusive questions about my personal life after we broke up. I’ve had some unpleasant experiences with parasocial relationships between viewers and ConversationsWithRuby.
If you were the new Vice Chancellor, what would be the first thing you would change?
Turn Trinity into a big Tesco.
