PITTSBURGH — Last year’s loss to Western Michigan was the biggest blemish on an otherwise stellar season for the Pitt Panthers. Of their three losses, a 44-41 loss at home to a Mid-American Conference team all but killed a shot at the College Football Playoff before it even materialized and tarnished their record for the rest of the season, even as the Panthers won a conference title and won berth in the New Years Six Bowl.
It was downright embarrassing for a Pitt team that thought it was capable of more. Defensive lineman David Green, a member of the defense, cut for 517 total yards a year ago. Green said he was channeling Michael Jordan’s attitude from The last dance and taking this game personally.
“It’s not in the past,” Green said. “I feel like Michael Jordan in the documentary. This is it. Yes, it definitely is [personal].”
The fact that this game comes on the heels of an emotional loss only adds to their desire to win, according to senior left fielder Carter Warren. He thinks his unit has improved from Week 1 to Week 2, but is doubly motivated by the revenge factor and the drive to improve.
“I feel like in our first game we really lacked technique and fundamentals, so I feel like in Week 2 we did a little bit better, but we still have a lot to work on,” Warren said. “And based on last week’s loss, we have as much motivation as ever.”
Senior quarterback Eric Hallett was picked on quite a bit in this game as Broncos quarterback Caleb Elleby threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns, most of which went to wide receivers Corey Crooms and Skye Moore, and he expects a raucous environment to greet the Panthers when they arrive at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
“It’s their inaugural meet, so I expect it to be packed,” Hallett said. “I’m expecting a good crowd, a really energetic crowd in Kalamazoo … so I’m expecting an exciting game.”
Green isn’t just expecting a rabid crowd, he’s hoping for one. He said he’s relishing the opportunity to silence an electrifying stadium as the visiting team and can’t wait to make Broncos fans sit on their hands.
“I love this type of environment where everybody’s booing us and we’re the underdogs,” Green said. “To shut everyone up, it’s a beautiful feeling.”
