For aficionados of the espionage genre, there are no surprises. Also, a large chunk of the plot has been left out, for a Season 2, so audiences will have to wait till June for more of the action and drama before the mission is accomplished.

The Disney+Hotstar show struggles to meet the high expectations set by the original show. The result is an average, if not entirely pointless, thriller. This iteration of The Night Manager caters clearly to a sensibility markedly different from the one that the BBC One thriller was aimed at. It is at best a serviceable adaptation. All things considered, The Night Manager manages to be steady but only in an unremarkable sort of way.

National Award winner Sandeep Modi has a tight grip on the narrative, and the show’s first episode will keep you hooked throughout with the engaging storyline and crackerjack treatment. However, in the parts where Shaan enters Shelly’s estate and befriends his son, Taha, to gain his trust, the pace and thrill intermittently take a slight beating. Although never dull, one eagerly waits for things to pick up again. When Shaan goes full throttle to make inroads into Shelly’s gang, the plot becomes more interesting.

Hotstar has made the confounding decision to split the series into two halves, effectively sabotaging one of the few watchable titles on its roster. The first part contains just four episodes, and the second, a pre-cap reveals, will arrive in June. Will audiences even be interested in returning to the series in three months? Who knows? Especially if they have access to the original as well. But assessed independently, the Indian Night Manager is just about efficient enough to overlook its demand of an early check-out.

When we talk about adaptations, especially the ones originally based on a book, you don’t often have high hopes, definitely not as a bibliophile. However, nothing gives you joy when the makers successfully manage to put together something, that is able to justify the original, while ensuring that there’s a fresh flavour to it. And with this Aditya Roy series, it is truly the case. Not saying there aren’t predictable moments, but they can easily be allowed to pass by!

If you haven’t watched the original series, the Indian adaption of The Night Manager is worth investing your time in. However, be prepared for the abrupt end that disappointments. It is an extra special treat for Aditya Roy Kapur’s fans.
