The internet is standing behind a man who walked out of a job interview when the hiring manager insisted they take off their face masks.
Posted on Reddit’s r/antiwork forum, u/EchoGecko795 garnered over 11,500 upvotes and 1,200 comments for writing “I was ordered to remove my mask during an in-person interview today, so I left.”
In the post, they reveal that this happened before the two had even introduced themselves.
“And I really mean I was ordered to. It wasn’t a polite request or even a passive aggressive joke. So I got up and left,” u/EchoGecho795 wrote.
They added that the hiring manager was shocked that they walked out of the interview and tried to come back, saying that if they had a medical condition they could continue to wear the mask as long as they had a doctor’s note .
“In today’s world of phone and video interviews, where no mask is required, there’s no reason to require someone to remove their mask in an in-person interview other than a power play, and I’m far less than stupid to give a damn about that BS.” , they said.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, masking mandates are controversial. Most recently, United States District Judge Catherine Kimball Mizell of the Middle District of Florida, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump, struck down the mask mandates on planes, buses and trains, ruling that the order exceeded the authority of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
There have been a number of protests both for and against mask mandates. Critics of the mandates say their freedom is infringed upon by requiring them to wear a mask and point to the drop in COVID-19 cases across the country as evidence mandates are no longer necessary. Proponents point out that although cases are declining, COVID-19 is still active and there are spikes in new cases as new variants emerge.
Many Redditors condemned the hiring manager’s request.
“Easily the kind of employer who will force COVID-positive people to come to work while they are within the contagious period (‘it’s just a cold’), will make others sick through exposure, force others to come to work sick, and then you get fired if you yell,” u/TheAngryLala wrote.
“Our one director killed our colleague. Dude felt sick, got tested, came to work without mask, Covid positive. Another person in his department had a weak immune system, caught Covid and died on a ventilator. No one is paying attention or talking about it, but us grumblers are going to say straight up “Dave killed Jerry,” u/Hita-san-chan wrote.
“You are so right to do that. According to the interview, you have no legal relationship with them and have not signed any contract. Imagine how they will break all the boundaries you have set if you agree to work for them. It’s pretty much the same as someone walking up to you on the street and telling you to take it off. It’s actually worse. You’re in a confined space and they didn’t seem to ask you if you had a reason to wear it,” u /bad_pangolin wrote.
“If you treat me like this when I don’t work for you, I don’t want to experience what it would be like if I did,” u/houck wrote.
