WASHINGTON (Gray, D.C.) – Sen.-elect Katie Britt (R-Ala.) has moved from working as chief of staff to Richard Shelby to replace him as a U.S. senator.
Now Alabama is going from one of America’s oldest senators, Shelby is 87, to one of the youngest. Britt is 40 years old.
Britt made his first trip to Congress decades ago as an intern for Shelby.
“Over 20 years ago,” said Britt, “and this very building. And now to be here with my name on the door, it’s really surreal.”
Britt won his election with 66 percent of the vote. She portrays herself as a family-loving senator. Britt said he can bring about the change voters want.
“They want us to seal and secure our border,” Britt said. “They see what this is doing in our communities from a safety standpoint and what it’s doing with the fentanyl crisis. This affects not only every community in Alabama, but schools and families as well.”
Britt says he wants to continue Shelby’s legacy of making connections and taking advantage of opportunities, but plans to put his own personal stamp on the position.
“Make sure I’m Senator Katie Britt,” Britt said. “I am myself. That I’m moving forward and working hard for our parents across our state and nation.”
Britt’s term technically begins on January 3, 2023.
