The Amateur’s Art #50 – ‘Nihon-go no sukitto’, by Severus Snape (Japanese, with English subtitles)

See here for what this series is about.

Director’s note: My friends and I made this short film/skit for the final assessment of the Spoken Japanese course in our college. I wrote the screenplay in English in two and a half hours and was so pumped up by the mere prospect of directing it with some mindblowing MiSe-En-ScEnE, but things went downhill pretty quickly, primarily due to my inexperience.

I did not anticipate the struggles of remembering the dialogues in an alien language(I now respect our maida-maavu heroines more). I didn’t know how a camera(that too a mobile/iPhone) is handled and how lighting works. I decided against retaking some scenes because we were satisfied with just managing to say their dialogue after 6-10 takes(even if the delivery was awful). All our grand plans for staging and editing went for a toss as we had three exams on a single day, and we were happy to submit the film before the deadline, at least.

I hope you watch the film and laugh/cringe; after all, it began as a comedy and ended as one :). It was both fun and frustrating, overlooking almost all aspects(which would be called ‘direction’) of the movie. We were simultaneously ashamed and amused(more ashamed than amused) by the output and decided against crediting ourselves with our respective departments, but I have to thank Kartik for helping with the ‘cinematography’, even if he didn’t take the course.
