Actor Kunal Kemmu made his OTT debut with ZEE5’s Abhay in 2019. The show is now back with a third season, one that is said to be darker and edgier. Kemmu will be seen reprising the role of the bad-tempered but brilliant investigating officer, Abhay Pratap Singh. The upcoming season will present Kemmu returning as the determined cop Abhay Pratap Singh who faces many new unknown threats while trying to balance his professional and personal life. “It was nice to play Abhay since he was so different from who I am and the parts I have played before. However, the stakes are higher in season 3 as the crimes get darker and more sinister and Abhay is at a crossroad as his professional and personal life get intertwined,” Kemmu says.
The finale of Abhay 3 wasn’t an easy one for Kemmu. “In this season, when you come to the finale episode, those four days were emotionally, physically, mentally, in a lot of ways taxing because there is also physical activity to do, but also emotionally, it drains you because you kind of keep tapping into that emotional bank.”
He adds, “We always say that when you’re doing comedy, even though you physically do so much more, you might come back home fresher or not that tired. Whereas, in an intense show, even if you do one scene which is hugely emotionally draining, you are way more tired than you are when you do a physical task. In Abhay, sometimes it’s a mix of all of that. You’re physically doing the action and there’s an emotional scene and it drains you out physically and mentally. So, this season did that to me.”
Kemmu made his movie at the age of 10, in 1993, with Mahesh Bhatt’s Sir and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. His performance as a boy caught between his estranged parents in Bhatt’s Zakhm (1998), is still remembered today.
He that his experience as a child actor eased his pursuit of leading parts. “When I started promoting Kalyug, people often asked that not many child actors become successful, so would I do if that happens, and honestly, I had blinders on as a kid,” Kemmu says.
Asha Negi will return as Sonam and Nidhi Singh as Khushboo, Abhay’s colleague. The third season will also see the entry of Dr. Anant Sinha played by Vijay Raaz, the head psychiatrist of the city asylum who has a mysterious alter ego and a cult following of devoted disciples including Vidya Malvade’s character of Nidhi.
The upcoming season of Abhay will stream exclusively on ZEE5 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu from April 8th.
