This is from Draft 6 of the screenplay, when I was still trying to get a fix on the tonality of the film. The scene is no longer there, hence putting it out here… It’s the story of a womanizing, much-married father named VIJI, his young children RATHINA (boy) and DHANA (girl).
It is raining heavily. We are in a long shed kind of building, almost like a godown that has been converted into a living quarters.
A teenaged RATHINA and a little younger DHANA are trying to get a peek at something. A woman is screaming. She is pregnant and about to deliver. She is surrounded by three other (older) women.
OLDER WOMAN 1: இதெல்லாம் நீங்க பாக்க கூடாது. அப்பா side-க்கு போங்க.
RATHINA and DHANA go to the other side of the house, where VIJI lives. The “house” is just a big hall with a partition.
As they kids cross the partition and enter VIJI’s side, they see him with a young girl who is removing the buttons of her blouse. RATHINA immediately turns DHANA around so she faces the opposite side and cannot see anything.
VIJI (removing his pants, with a pissed-off expression): என்ன டா?
RATHINA (looking at the floor, in a low voice): இங்க இருக்க சொன்னாங்க…
VIJI (in his underwear; loudly): என்னது?
RATHINA (also loudly): உங்க நாலாவது சம்சாரதுக்கு கொழந்தை பொறக்க போகுது. அதெல்லாம் நாங்க பாக்க கூடாது-னு இங்க இருக்க சொன்னாங்க.
YOUNG WOMAN (laughs): இங்க நடக்க போறதையும் நீ பாக்க கூடாது கண்ணு.
She winks at RATHINA and blows a kiss at him. He is disgusted. He spits on the ground.
VIJI: சரி, ரெண்டு பேரும் அந்த பக்கம் பாத்து உக்காருங்க. (He laughs) டேய் RATHINA, இந்த பக்கம் பாத்தா கூட தப்பில்ல டா. இதெல்லாம் உன் English school-ல கத்து தரமாட்டாங்க.
YOUNG WOMAN also laughs. Screams of labour pain are heard from the other side. RATHINA closes DHANA’s ears tightly. He looks back to see the YOUNG WOMAN. VIJI is riding her but YOUNG WOMAN is staring at RATHINA. She opens her mouth and makes dirty gestures with her tongue. He makes a big ball of spit and lets it drop down. YOUNG WOMAN smiles.
He turns his head and keeps his eyes screwed shut but keeps seeing the YOUNG WOMAN’s face and imagines that he is riding her. RATHINA shivers and crosses his legs tightly. The mix of sex sounds and labour-pain sounds seems to surround him.
VIJI finishes with a big grunt and drops down on the YOUNG WOMAN, his back covered with sweat. The labour-pain sounds have stopped. He turns to RATHINA.
VIJI: டேய் RATHINA, ஆம்பள புள்ளயா பொம்பளையா-னு கேளுடா?
RATHINA takes his hands off DHANA’s ears and gets up to ask the woman beyond the partition. YOUNG WOMAN laughs, looking at his crotch area. RATHINA looks down and sees a wet stain. He immediately covers it with his hands. VIJI also starts laughing. He rolls off YOUNG WOMAN and lies on his back.
VIJI: அப்பனுக்கு தப்பாம பொறந்திருக்கே டா!
