Suella Braverman describes the many uses of personal email for official documents

UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman used her personal email address to process official documents on seven occasions, an internal Home Office investigation has concluded.

Braverman, who faced criticism for her handling of sensitive information that led to her resignation under Liz Truss’ short-lived government, wrote to the House of Commons home affairs committee to apologize for her actions.

In a letter to Diana Johnson, the committee’s chairwoman, Braverman revealed that she used her personal email address to distribute official work documents on Oct. 19 and on six other occasions before her resignation.

“The Home Office have carried out a review of my use of a personal email and have confirmed the above sequence of events. The review also found that between September 6 and October 19, I sent official documents from my government email to my personal email address six times,” she wrote.

Braverman said the six cases involved briefing documents for ministerial meetings and media interviews.

In the seven-page letter, Braverman sets out the timeline of events that led to her resignation on October 19 after a draft ministerial statement on migration reform was emailed to Sir John Hayes, a former security secretary and veteran right-wing backbencher.

Instead it was sent to a parliamentary assistant to Andrew Percy, MP for Brigg and Goole. Braverman wrote, “I regret the errors of judgment noted above and reiterated my apologies to Mr. Percy” for sending the email.

Braverman has been trained by security experts to handle sensitive information.
