They relive their past. The former The challenge contestants offered a behind-the-scenes look at their personal and professional triumphs for the new book How to Win at Challenge and Life: A Champion’s Guide to Clearing Obstacles, Winning Friends, and Earning That Money.
The book, which was released on Tuesday, October 25, features interviews conducted by Sidney Bucksbaum featuring more than two dozen Challenge champions as they navigate their way to success in the MTV franchise.
Chris “CT” Tamburellowho was a contestant on The Real World: Parishe recalled that he didn’t expect to “get this far” when he joined the racing series.
“I originally got into it because I wanted to do it for my son. I knew there would come a time when he was old enough to know that his old man was on TV, and I didn’t want him to see me as some dork running around with a severed head,” the New York native, who shared son with his wife Lily Solares, in detail. “I wanted him to see me as I am today. I think I accomplished that.”
Tamburello continued: “But as time went on, it became about me and getting my confidence back, standing on my own two feet and showing that I still have it. For me, this one was the most special.”
The The real world alum previously opened up about his dedication to the franchise. “I made some lifestyle changes. I got my butt back in shape,” he shared in a confessional at the time The Spies, Lies and Allies Challenge: Global Activation in August 2021. “I figured if I didn’t have the element of surprise with the dad anymore, I could go in hot.”
Earlier that year, Tamburello said he had no plans to retire from The Challenge franchise. “Since I took a break and came back with the father, no one wanted me. I’ve always been underestimated,” he exclusively said Us Weekly in April 2021. “It’s funny because I have a higher winning percentage now during my dad’s era than I did in my 20s.”
The MTV personality noted that she doesn’t “need to do anything physical” to prove herself, adding, “I fucking love that. It’s the greatest game in the world. You have to be able to do everything really well. You can’t prepare for it. I’ve been doing it for so long, part of me wants to say that’s all I know. If I honestly felt I couldn’t compete, I would go home and give it to someone who deserves to be here.
Meanwhile, Johnny “Banana” Devenanzio described the “embarrassing and draining” feeling after his iconic elimination with a backpack of bananas. “Then I realized why they have weight classes in boxing and wrestling,” he said during his interview for the book. “There is literally nothing I could have done differently to change this outcome. But most of all, I learned that the Challenge is just like life, in that sometimes it just isn’t fair. And complaining about it won’t change anything.
Devenanzio continued, “If anything, it just made me want to come back and be that much hungrier to do better because I learned that I’m more motivated by my failures than my successes — and there’s no a bigger failure than this.”
