In any case, Sharmaji Namkeen elicits suppressed chuckles rather than hearty guffaws. Neither too salty nor overly spicy, it glides along gently in search of a core that can hold it together. But even when the wafer-thin plot does not deliver, Rishi Kapoor does by giving us one last glimpse of his histrionic felicity, blending the comic with the dramatic without breaking a sweat.

The best parts of the film, which flattens occasionally, are the portions which focus on the shy Sharmaji shedding his reluctance and finding easy companionship with the ladies who kitty-party their dull afternoons away, playing naughty dumb charade games, or dancing to Yeh Duniya Pittal Di

Rishi Kapoor’s endearing swan song is like the food that Sharmaji dishes out: well-balanced with just the right amount of sugar and spice, not aiming to be flashy but offering the comfort of a home-cooked meal.

This inoffensive tone of bittersweet reality is Sharmaji Namkeen’s greatest triumph as it unfolds the droll journey of a man — neither eager nor ready for retirement — finding a perfect outlet for his passion and free time as a specialist cook for kitty parties.

Get busy living or get busy dying’. Routine is quite underrated, isn’t it? Sometimes, even a dead-end job can keep you going. Sharmaji’s former home appliances job is no different here. It has kept him busy and sometimes that is all that matters. Post retirement, whatsapp groups and his love for cooking leads him to a ladies kitty gang (led by Juhi Chawla). He finds solace in their mundane chatter and despite their privilege; the women are as collectively desolate as him. Through a slice-of-life, simple tale, director Hitesh Bhatia makes a light-hearted but moving case against ageism and gender stereotypes.

Sharmaji Namkeen is a sweet, simple film, where you don’t mind getting swayed by sentiment because of how it touches your heart. There are issues no doing, but not once do they trump the fitting swansong this turns out to be for Rishi Kapoor.

On the whole, SHARMAJI NAMKEEN is a heartwarming film. Despite the shortcomings, it will leave viewers smiling. It’ll also benefit and stand out as it’s the last film of Rishi Kapoor.
