Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s recently released song titled Besharam Rang from their upcoming film Pathaan has faced right-wing trolls, including members of both the ruling and opposition political parties, over the saffron bikini worn by the actress in the film. At the opening ceremony of the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF), Shah Rukh Khan said in his address, without mentioning the controversy or his film Pathaan, that “collective narratives in recent times have often been shaped by social media, which it is often driven by a narrowness of outlook that confines human nature to its lower self. He added that such persecutions make the collective narrative more divisive and destructive. Shahrukh then switched to Hindi and ended his speech by saying, “The world has become normal. We are all happy, I am the happiest. And I don’t mind stating that duniya kuch bhi kar le, main aur aap log aur jitney bhi positive log hain sab ke sab, zinda hain (I, all of you and all positive people are alive).”

Following Madhya Pradesh minister Narottam Mishra, BJP leaders also demanded that the state government ban the film in Uttar Pradesh with immediate effect and take strict action against the makers for insulting ‘Sanatan Sanskrit’. Many Hindutva activists also raised objections, saying the actors’ attire promoted love jihad.
