Set Photos From Father of the Bride with Adria Arjona

For Adria Arjona, who stars in the new film Father of the Bride, streaming now on HBO Max, taking on the role of bride to be Sofia Herrera was an apt chance to appreciate both something out and something new. “My mom showed me the Steve Martin and Martin Short Father of the Bride when I was a kid,” she says, “and Kimberly Williams, who played the bride in that version, sent me a video when my role was announced sort of handing me the baton; it was so special and moving.”

Equally exciting was giving the film—based on that 1991 version which itself was adapted from the 1950 Vincente Minnelli movie—a contemporary update. “This movie means so much to me, and it’s a modern take on the idea; who’s the father of the bride today, who’s the bride, and what do those roles mean,” Arjona says. “Within all of the conflict in the story lies so much comedy, which is what makes it such an enduring story.”

It was also a chance to work with co-stars like Andy Garcia, who plays the title character, and Gloria Estefan, as the mother of the bride, and celebrate almost as much off set as their characters do in the film. “This movie was the one where I hung out the most with my colleagues,” Arjona says. “We’d hang out every day on set from 5 a.m. until 8 p.m. and then we’d go have dinner, get a few drinks, and the next day do it all over again. On the weekends, Gloria would host something or Enrique or I would host something. We just didn’t want to be away from one another, which helped us create the atmosphere and energy that’s in the film. You can’t fake that.

Here, Arjona opens her personal camera roll to T&C to share a behind-the-scenes look at Father of the Bride, and the moments that didn’t make it on screen.

“I’m with Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia, and Isabela Merced having a shot of tequila after a long day of work. This is Andy Garcia’s trailer, where we were a lot. Diego Boneta and I would go in there a lot to ask Andy for advice or work on scenes. Andy’s trailer and my trailer were two big ones for people to hang out in; it was amazing to be able to just wander in and ask Andy Garcia anything.”

“Enrique Murciano, who plays my cousin, threw this huge party in Atlanta and it was such a great bonding moment. I had never smoked a Cuban cigar before in my life, and I don’t think I ever will again because I almost passed out, but it was a cool experience to unite with my on-screen family members. But kids, don’t smoke.”

“Everyone’s family came to visit this set, I think that’s part of how we all fell in love with each other so quickly. This is my real father, Ricardo Arjona, who’s one of the biggest musicians in Latin America, with Andy. My dad is a big fan of Andy and Andy’s a big fan of my dad, so it was this cool moment seeing my two fathers together.”

“This is what Chloe Fineman and I called our diva moment. We took this photo with a purpose. It was so hot in Miami and we’d just had enough of the heat when we saw this fearsome female statue and wanted to pose with her.”

“These are Diego’s sunglasses, and I stole them right at the beginning of the night. I was like, ‘thanks, these are cute, they’re mine.’ I’m not even sure I gave them back. I’m here with Gloria and Marta Velasco, who plays my grandmother. It was awesome to have the three-generations of these characters together. It was also the first time on set I’d worn my hair curly, and I think Gloria and I really do look like mother and daughter.”

“This project was so unique. Every weekend we had something planned to do together; we went mini golfing and bowling, there was karaoke and dancing and parties until four in the morning. You don’t get to do that on every movie; sometimes people just do their job and then go back into their own little bubble. On this one, we refused to do that.”
