With the theme ‘Stocker’s Skills for Cattle Exhibiting and Showing’, the winner of this year’s Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s Dr Emrys Evans Award is Mr Kai Edwards from Clwyd.
The judges were extremely impressed by the high standard of entries for the award kindly sponsored by Mrs Mair Evans. All ten candidates demonstrated a wide range of skills including modern techniques and traditional methods and showed a variety of animals from sheep to cattle and horses. Other skills, including cutting and trimming in preparation for exhibitions, often highlight the number of hours applicants have devoted to exhibiting.
“It was a real honor to be asked to judge the Dr. Emrys Evans Award this year.” said judges Mr DE Meurig James FRAgS and Mr Martin Sivill.
“Getting the opportunity to visit various young farmers from across Wales was an exciting task and they did not disappoint when we met each of them. The skills that were presented to us and the stock that was shown to us was a credit to every single candidate.”
Two candidates stood out above the rest, both showing a tremendous amount of knowledge and skill in displaying their chosen stocks.
Non Thorne of Pembrokeshire owns an exceptional herd of pedigree Hereford cattle. Her enthusiasm for the breed was evident in the time she spends promoting it. She used social media to help her promote the breed, especially during Lockdown when there were no shows. She confidently presented her stock and demonstrated her skills as a competent show person.
Cai Edwards of Clwyd owns and shows beef and pedigree Limousin cattle. He made a big impression on the judges as soon as they entered his yard.
“The team of show cattle was tied up and ready for inspection. His preparation, including demonstrating the process of preparing an animal for the show ring and the knowledge he clearly possesses was evident. He has also had great success on the show circuit, many of which have been with homebred cattle. Cai’s awareness of changing markets means he would like to increase pedigree numbers, but has also shown he sees the benefit of commercial stock, selling well on the back of the show’s successes.’
After much deliberation the judges are pleased to award the Dr Emrys Evans Prize to Kai Edwards of Clwyd and wish him and all the applicants every success in the future.
A certificate and medal will be presented on Monday 18 July at the Royal Welsh Show in memory of Dr Emrys Evans, Royal Welsh Gold Medalist and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, who died on the eve of the centenary in 2004 Mr.
