ROCKY AUR RANI KII PREM KAHAANI is not an easy film to write and execute. It’s clear that KJo has moved on with the times. This is evident in the screenwriting — it’s progressive and addresses societal issues. Also women empowerment. Additionally, KJo knows how to translate emotions on screen, an aspect that plays out in the third act of the film. On the whole, ROCKY AUR RANI KII PREM KAHAANI is a well-packaged entertainer that has ample merits to strike a chord with the youth as well as families. At the box-office, it has the potential to emerge a success story.

The harried, bullied women of the Randhawa household finally find their voice (follow your heart!), the overbearing grandma (women can also be patriarchal!) discovers the error of her ways, and the men (both Singh and Bashir!) learn that respecting the elders is one thing, but no one has the right to be nasty to the ladies. Down with misogyny and patriarchy. Up with feminism. But wrap them all in dialogues leached of all nuance. It’s same old, same old: romance between the rebellious young, but loving their families, and everyone living happily after.

Except the cliches and culture appropriation of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani’s opulent, exuberant voice is determined to achieve just that — undo the adverse effects of popular imagery by speaking up on body shaming, racism, sexism, patriarchy, misogyny, toxic masculinity, bigotry, elitism and conservatism in ways that may not seem like a big deal to the enlightened ones but influence ones in need of desperate intervention.It’s the age of influencers, after all.As far as prem kahanis go, I am still rooting for Team Rahul and Anjali, but if we are talking subversion, Rocky and Rani’s fully filmi revolution could truly be a start of ‘soch nayi’ if ‘swad wahi.’

The second half does slow down towards the end and KJo feels a bit caught up in the trope of having too much on his platter. Nevertheless, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ is a family entertainer that is a gentle reminder of Karan’s legacy and his love for blockbuster cinema. Go watch it at a theatre near you. Or in Jaya ji’s words – bas keh diya so keh diya!

The story takes a while to set up, and the first half is a bit slow, but it picks up pace and gets super-entertaining in the second half. The way family matters resolve is predictable and simplistic. Yet, it subtly depicts the winds of change when Rocky’s parents ask for Rani’s hand in marriage, saying they want their son to be the Chatterjees’ damad instead of asking their daughter to be their bahu. At heart, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is a full-on entertaining and sweet love story, with flashy and feisty characters given to us in a well-wrapped shiny package.

The maverick filmmaker Karan Johar, who returns to the director’s chair after 7-long years, brings out a delightful family drama, which is not boring even for a single frame. Apart from showing cultural differences in the most apt manner, which is complemented by beautiful songs, exotic locations, vibrant feels and larger-than-life sets, KJo gives some important social messages of contemporary society in a subtle yet impactful manner. On the whole, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is easily one of the best films of the year and needs to be watched on the big screen.

Karan Johar shouldn’t take too long a sabbatical between directing films and should start filming his next pronto.
