Review by: Russell D’Silva
Bollywood has not had a great track record when it comes to fantasy films. While science fiction has done surprisingly well, with the Krrish franchise being the best example, and Ra One also having moderate success, Bollywood fantasy films from Ajooba to Drona, Naksha or Jajantaram Mamantaram regularly fail to impress both critics and audiences . Conversely when it comes to movies based on Hindi mythology, with Naksha and Vaah Life Ho Toh Aisi present for every OMG and Taqdeerwala. Now comes Ayan Mukerji’s directorial Brahmastra, backed to the hilt by producer Karan Johar, who took 5 years to bring all the above elements together, promising a fictional fiction like no other. So will the Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer turn out to be the spectacle it has been promising all along? The answer is a resounding yes. So, are you excited about what to watch this weekend or what to watch this week and wondering if Brahmastra is worth your time? An evil force works to gather the three broken pieces of the Brahmastra and awaken a Dev who once tried to destroy the world. Only Shiva, an ordinary man with hidden, extraordinary secrets, can be the unwitting savior. What’s new

Brahmashtra is the greatest visual spectacle till date in Indian cinema, even bigger than Baahubali and SS Rajamouli’s RRR. Three spine-tingling moments stand out – a chase scene, the interval block when Ranbir realizes the full extent of his powers, and the climax to the moment Mouni Roy almost emerges victorious. That’s 5 years of blood, sweat and sacrifice that really paid off. Knowing full well that a Marvel-level budget was not at their disposal, Ayan Mukerji and Karan Johar “brilliantly” create a visual world that is striking despite its financial constraints thanks to both the best-ever use of VFX in an Indian film and the stunning cinematography. The plot and folklore are also well-merged with a modern hard-hitting no-victim tradition so that all age groups can enjoy themselves. Even the songs are shot very well and never interfere with the flow of the narrative. As for the performances, Ranbir Kapoor carries the entire film, while Amitabh Bachchan and Alia Bhatt are his capable pillars, while Mouni Roy is the perfect foil and Nagarjuna’s cameo is intense. That being said, Shah Rukh Khan still steals the show for 15 minutes. Can’t wait for #BrahmastraMovie part 2.

What is not

The dialogues are so juvenile at times that if they were even a little better, the film could have been almost flawless. The romantic track is also a double-edged sword because as much as it is a catalyst for Ranbir’s powers, it also drags the story down at quite a few places. And the climax was brilliant until the romantic angle comes up again after Mouni almost wins but again a big transformation in Ranbir’s avatar saves the day. I guess it’s to Ayan’s credit that he always saves things just when you think they’re about to sink. Prakash Kurup’s editing could also have been tighter by at least 20-25 minutes.

BL Judgment

The visual pleasure alone is worth twice the proof of admission to the Brahmastra. The dialogues and romance could have been streamlined, but the fantasy world and folklore that immerses you is enough to ensure that hardly anyone will walk out of the theater saying they didn’t have a good time. I’m going with 3.5 out of 5 stars.
