Ace director Mani Ratnam launched the trailer and audio of his much-awaited magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan at a star-studded event in Chennai on Tuesday. It was attended by Indian walking legends Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan along with the film’s cast including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Trisha Krishnan, Naaser, Parthiban and others. During the launch, Rajinikanth revealed that he was keen to act in the film, but Mani Ratnam turned down his request.
Rajinikanth said that he has asked Mani Ratnam to give the character of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, adding that he will make a special appearance. However, Mani Ratnam said that Rajini fans would not accept Thalaivar in the role and would attack the director for it. “Anyone else would agree, but Mani doesn’t. This is Mani Ratnam,” Rajini added. The film stars R Sarathkumar as Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar.
The Kabali star also revealed that when he read Poniin Selvan’s story, he imagined Kamal as Arulmojivarman, Sridevi as Kundawai, Vijaykanth as Aditya Karikalan and Sathyaraj as Pajuvettarayar. The film stars Trisha as Kundavai, Vikram as Aditya Karikalan and Jayam Ravi as Arulmojivarman.
The trailer of Ponniyin Selvan managed to intrigue the fans with its grandeur, dramatic costumes, long-term battlefield, intense characters and larger-than-life scenes. The cast also left an impression on the audience. Now it remains to be seen how the story of the Chola Kingdom will unfold in theaters and connect with the audience.
