Kolkata professor who was allegedly forced to resign for posting swimsuit pictures on her personal Instagram account shares her ordeal.
Even months after the incident, a former assistant professor at Xavier’s University in Kolkata who was purportedly fired for uploading photos of herself in a bikini on her personal Instagram account continues to live in dread.
She says she is no longer on social media and has been out of work for several months.
She also believes that the incident has affected her entire family. She is battling a legal battle with the university that has launched a Rs 99 crore defamation lawsuit against her.
The assistant professor was allegedly asked to step down after a student’s father complained that his son was looking at her “vulgar” photographs.
According to the professor, the photos were uploaded as stories, a feature that deletes pictures after 24 hours. She maintains that she has no idea how the photographs became public.
“Someone must have taken a screenshot and circulated the photographs,” the professor claims, adding that she tried to convey this to university officials, who did not believe her.
She also claims that the images were uploaded before she became a professor at the university.
“They should have found out how the student accessed that photo. Instead, they took steps against me,” the former professor said.
Timeline of events:
She was fired in October 2021, but she has yet to disclose her identity or whereabouts to the public due to safety concerns.
In an interview with News18, the former professor claims that the photographs were posted before she joined the university.
“I joined this university in August. I had uploaded photos of myself in a swimsuit before joining the university, which is legally not wrong.”
Following the parents’ complaint, the university formed a committee to investigate the matter.
“I was told to be present in front of a committee set up by the university. They showed me my photos; they had already taken print-outs of my photos without my permission. They asked me whether these were my pictures and if I was aware of how these images could affect students?” she recalled.
“They intimated me from October 7. I was not given any time to respond. On October 8, I had a one-on-one interaction with the VC. He threatened me that he would file an FIR against me. I had to put down my papers,” said the teacher.
She claims the university launched a witchhunt against her:
“They did witch hunt. They did not give me the minutes of the meeting. They did not follow the Vishakha guidelines. When I sent them a legal letter seeking clarifications, they asked for an unconditional apology and slapped a defamation case worth Rs 99 crore.”
“Which rule did I violate? Why did they not do social media evaluation before they hired me?”
The former assistant professor also claims that she does not know who the father-son duo who complained against her was.
The university authorities were constantly safeguarding them, she claimed. “In this University, students are customers so they will safeguard them.”
