Blackwell shared: “This series was conceived while Ruth Hobday and I were working on a book about Nelson Mandela and his letters from prison in 2018. As we worked to digest 27 years of Mandela’s personal correspondence, reflecting on his courageous and selfless commitment to well-being of others, we were simultaneously faced with a news cycle relentlessly focused on certain international politicians behaving in exactly the opposite way – shamelessly pursuing self-interest, using divisive and disinformation tactics to serve power rather than the people .

He continued: “This contrast cements our determination to honor Mandela’s values by revealing the stories of leaders who stand out for their moral courage, conviction in their ideals and values, and putting others first.”

“With the world in the state it is in, trying to heal from a global pandemic, with populism and misinformation on the rise, the need for effective leadership is critical,” said Selo Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. in a statement. “Live to Lead was created to help inspire better leaders, those who are committed to ending poverty and inequality and who show leadership in creating the just society of Nelson Mandela’s dreams.”
