TikTok user mandymorgue87 recently rediscovered the Canadian horror film Pin (per Dread Central), which was also titled Pin: A Plastic Nightmare. And with over 200,000 views, it’s renewed the interest of quite a few other people. At the start of the TikTok, mandymorgue87 called the film one of the weirdest horror movies she’s ever seen. Once you read the film’s summary, you’ll probably see why.
“This is a really interesting psychological horror story about trauma and it’s just so weird, I don’t even know how to describe it,” said mandymorgue87
Based on the 1981 novel by Andrew Neiderman, the plot concerns two isolated siblings, Leon and Ursula, who have these distant parents. Due to their unusual upbringing, Leon and Ursula develop a very—peculiar relationship. The kind you’d expect from an author who later became a ghostwriter for V. C. Andrews. And that’s arguably not even the most disturbing thing about the story.
Their father is a doctor who uses an anatomically correct dummy named Pin to teach people about the human body. Using ventriloquism, he uses Pin to interact and connect with his children. Leon comes to believe that Pin is not only alive but also his only friend. His obsession with Pin grows as he grows older, making Leon unpredictable and violent.
The Makers of the Film
The film, which was released in 1988, was written and directed by Sandor Stern, who also wrote the screenplay for the original The Amityville Horror movie. Stern also went on to write and direct Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes. The cast of the film is something of a who’s who when it comes to different horror movies.
Pin was an early starring role from David Hewlett, who went on to make several horror projects with Vincenzo Natali, such as Cube, Splice, and the “Graveyard Rats” episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Terry O’Quinn, The Stepfather 1-2, Silver Bullet also plays the father in Pin. Cynthia Preston, who played Ursula, would later appear in The Brain (1988), Prom Night III: The Last Kiss, and Carrie (2013).
“It has excellent acting.”
Beyond that, Jonathan Banks from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul also serves as the voice of Pin in the movie. If all of that was enough to entice you into checking the film out for yourself, you can watch the whole movie on YouTube now. You could also read the book as well, though bear in mind the film cuts down on some of the more disturbing and sexual elements of the original novel.
“Someone uploaded it to youtube, and I highly suggest you watch it because it’s not streaming anywhere else. This one was just really surprising and shocking. And it was completely unexpected. It was a wild ride, and I feel like movies like this don’t really exist anymore.”
