7 year old Michael Dillon interviews celebrities at ACC tournament.

7-year-old Michael Dillon gets to interview celebrities taking part in the ACC golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Resort on July 7, 2022.

Jason Bean, Reno Gazette Journal

A couple names not usually among the leaders in the celebrity golf tournament changed that discourse on Friday as TJ Oshie scored 21 points and Adam Thielen had 18.

Oshie, a forward with the Washington Capitals, is in first place at the American Century Championship, followed by Mark Mulder and Annika Sorenstam with 20, then Thielen, Tony Romo, Mike Modano and Carson Palmer, each with 18 points.

Oshie, who had a double bogey on No, 15, made up for that with an eagle on No. 18. An eagle is worth 6 points while a double bogey is 0 in the Modified Stableford scoring system in use.

Mulder had five birdies on Friday, all on the back nine.

Sorenstam finished with a birdie on No. 18. She said the course seems a little tougher this year than last. She plays from the men’s tees.

“The greens are a little more tricky,” Sorenstam said. “But overall, my game, it was a little mixed bag. I hit some really good shots. Missed a few on the par 3s. I think the par 3s got me in the bunker and didn’t make up-and-down.

“But obviously it feels good to finish with a birdie, makes lunch feel better, and three points is a lot more than one, so I’ll take it.”

Oshie said the large galleries around holes No. 17 and 18 got to him a little “because there’s a lot of people walking on the right,” he said. “I tried to hit just a big draw so I made sure I stayed away from them. I wasn’t necessarily worried about the fairway. Ended up hitting a 50-degree wedge. A little over 12, 13 feet, and didn’t really know where the putt was going to go. So my caddie just told me hit it straight and I found the cup.”

He played in a group with David and Derek Carr on Friday. Derek is the Las Vegas Raiders quarterback and David Carr is a retired NFL quarterback.

“The nerves kind of settled down with those guys. I was just hitting some shots. The putter was really hot tonight,” he said. “The front nine, I really thought maybe I would just have a really good nine holes, and then kind of fall off. But ended up coming in strong.”

Oshie, who won the 2018 Stanley Cup with the Capitals, is a 14-year NHL veteran. He played for St. Louis for seven seasons (2008-15) and was traded to Washington prior to the 2015-16 season.

He is treating this week like a family vacation.

“I’ve never been even close to sniffing even the leaderboard,” he said. “So we’ll go out, have some fun, play in the pool. I’ll maybe throw some heat packs on the old lower back and get ready for tomorrow.”

Mulder loves seeing a full crowd again after no fans were allowed in 2020, and spectators were limited last year.

“I feed off of it a little, to be honest. Two years ago I thought was — it sucked here. It was awful. Not having anybody here, there was no vibe. That’s what creates this tournament, is that vibe from all the fans that are out there every day,” Mulder said. “And I live for that. I think a lot of us athletes, at least with my career, or the ones whose careers are done, you don’t get to play in front of people anymore.”

Thielen, a wide receiver with the Minnesota Vikings, had two double bogeys and five birdies in Friday’s round.

“A little psychotic is a great way to describe my golf game. It’s the consistency. I feel like I can hang with anybody, but consistency was rough today,” Thielen said.

Jake Owen, a country music singer, scored 16 points as he played in a group with 2020 ACC champion Mardy Fish.

This is Owen’s first ACC tournament, and he said it exceeded his expectations.

He appeared to enjoy laughing and talking with the spectators who lined the fairways and greens all along the golf course.

“Everybody told me how much fun this place is. And they were absolutely 150 percent correct. I’ve had a blast today,” Owen said. “The golf course, everybody here has this place in pure, pristine condition. The guys all here, and girls, we had a blast last night with the concert. And the weather’s perfect. The fans are out here supporting it. So I honestly don’t know how it could be any better. I really don’t.”

Leaderboard

More notable scores: john Smoltz is tied for eighth with Marshall Faulk, each with 17 points; Steph Curry finished with 16 points in the first round. His father, Dell Curry had 14 and Seth Curry had minus 4.

Mardy Fish has 15 points and defending champion Vinny Del Negro has 14.

Justin Timberlake is tied for 37th with 7 points.

Golfing for his hair: In one of the many side bets the celebrities make this week, Charles Barkley and Aaron Rodgers have one about Rodgers’ manbun.

If Barkley beats Rodgers, he gets to cut Rodgers hair. if Rodgers beats Barkley — a good bet — Barkley will donate $25,000 to the North Valley Community Foundation in Rodgers’ hometown of Chico, California.

Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers quarterback, already has donated $1 million to the NVCF, which provides COVID relief funds for 80 small businesses in Chico and surrounding Butte County.

Barkley, the former NBA star and current NBA analyst on TNT, has a better chance at finishing in the top 70, one of the prop bets available this week

He had his best result in years in 2021, finishing tied for 76th in a field of 88. He was in 71st place after Friday’s round with minus-10 points.

Rodgers has three top-20 finishes in the last five years.

“He doesn’t need 25,000 (dollars). He needs about $22 because a man bun is not a thing. Just because you’re too cheap to cut your hair, you can’t make it a style,” Barkley said.

Rodgers is not worried about losing his hair.

“I could play left-handed and with a 7-iron only and beat Charles,” Rodgers said after Wednesday’s celeb-am round. “I’m looking forward to Charles donating that $25,000 to the North Valley Community Foundation.”

Battle of the sexes: Kira K. Dixon, Annika Sorenstam and Paige Spiranac defeated Marcus Allen and Jerry Rice in a short-game golf skills competition on Thursday.

Golf personality Spiranac nearly holed out a 30-yard bunker shot and the women’s team easily defeated NFL Hall of Famers Rice and Allen.

Rice was giving the women a bit of trash talk before the bunker shot, and when Spiranac’s ball came to a rest a few inches from the hole, Allen said to him, “That’s a shut-down corner right there, Jerry.”

Players from each team hit two shots from the rough and two from a bunker, with the aggregate distance of each team’s top player deciding the match.

“We had a legend,” Spiranac said, referring to Sorenstam. “It freed us up to play loose.”

Two long-timers: Two celebrities who have played in every tournament at Edgewood, all 33 years, are back this week: Jim McMahon and Jack Wagner.

McMahon has a serious foot injury, but he insisted on playing because he did not want to miss the tournament.

He was offered an injury exemption, but refused, saying he wanted to gut it out.

Wagner’s son, Harrison, was found dead in a parking in Los Angeles on June 6 after battling addiction problems. He was 27.

ACC will be back through 2024: The contract with American Century Investments to be the title sponsor of the celebrity tournament runs through 2024.

Next year will be the 25th that American Century has been the title sponsor, taking over after Isuzu could not continue as the sponsor.

The tournament benefits up to 40 charities in South Lake Tahoe.
