‘Notes on this, that, and everything in between’ – Episode 2: Watching older films…

I dont have a problem in watching these old classics.
I either watch them to laugh at their cheesiness or to know why people then found them great.

I watched MGR’s Vivasaayi some months back , which had a scene where an old farmer pounces on KR Vijaya just because she wore modern clothes and he got turned on seeing her in them.

And MGR belts out the Nalla Nalla Nilam Paarthu song that doesn’t even match with the situation that just happened.

It was terrible to watch , but I was thoroughly engaged by Kudiyirundha Kovil , despite knowing what will happen next thanks to the many and many son swapping movies which came after this that I watched.

One thing that I learnt from these old movies is , (which I said a lot here in this blog) they too had political leanings , some even directly supported certain political parties , but unlike today’s movies , they had a story to back up that political messaging.

Parasakthi wasn’t just a random Karunanidhi sermon made into a movie , it had a dramatic story of a guy searching his siblings.

The mid 60s to early 70s MGR movies had DMK / ADMK propagandist dialogues and songs , but MGR didn’t forget that he had a Nambiar / Ashokan to beat up and teach a lesson.
