Neeyat could’ve been a taut edge-of-the-seat murder-mystery, but fails to deliver thanks to half-baked writing and too many characters… The surprises, shocks and most importantly, suspense just doesn’t work… Even the dependable VidyaBalan is strictly okay.

Neeyat starring Vidya Balan with an ensemble cast is a film brimming with possibilities. The end twist, though far-fetched, is wicked. And the set-up for a sequel is even more delicious. I can’t wait to see what these characters do next. The problem is the material before we get to this point. It’s an undercooked slog.

On the whole, Neeyat may be a well-made film with some lovely performances, but its box-office performance will be far from encouraging because such films, nowadays, are enjoyed on OTT platforms more than in cinemas. Lack of awareness about the film’s release is another dampener.

You will find many influences here: the spread-eagled body lying on the rocks below looks straight out of Agatha Christie’s ‘Death On The Nile’; the rising body count is very ‘And Then There Were None’, also by the same author; so is the process of gathering all the suspects, and focussing on each person’s dark past till the real culprit is caught. You can also spot a Daphne du Maurier touch from her acclaimed Gothic novel, ‘Rebecca’. ‘Neeyat’ is a film trying hard to be original but never quite shaking off the feeling that it is treading familiar ground.

In a location-based murder-mystery where it takes 30 minutes to establish the proceedings and an hour before the first death, this does feel a teensy bit narratively extravagant. Even if you want to overlook, you can’t find uncanny resemblance to many Agatha Christie novels and the film does feel like a tamer version of the spectacularly crafted Glass Onion Knives Out (2022) barring aside the final twist, which of course is the crux of the film.Neeyat has its moments and is a sincere attempt but it isn’t engaging enough for you to feel the joy of solving a murderous puzzle or detective riddles.

Neeyat was more like a stage play including the dialogues, the acting and the colour palette. But there was definitely something that was very charming about the film especially the witty power play and the conversations. But why did I feel like the character of Ram Kapoor who plays the role of a rich businessman settled in UK appeared more like Vijay Mallya including his beard, his body structure, his dressing and most importantly few connections of the story. But the film definitely lacks originality. The Neeyat (intention) was fine, but the execution was wrong.

The film is watchable purely for the performances and the way it’s stylised. It offer a couple of spooky scenes, too. But for a thriller, the movie deserved a far tighter screenplay, more suspense and surprise elements thrown in. But we are left needing for that.

There is hardly one scene which you will remember once you walk out of the theatre, so the visuals don’t leave an impressionable impact as well. However, Vidya is decent as she embodies the robotic nerd-like character. It is not her best performance in recent times, but she manages to bring in nuances to her character, despite limitations.‘Neeyat’ is entertaining as long as you can overlook the mediocre performances. A difficult ask!

As a cinema lover, it hurts me when I see good plot let down by average performances. This is the case with Neeyat. While no one is straightaway bad in the film, no one rises high either. Middle of the ground, that’s where everyone strays and eventually, even with a good story, the film also stays at that level. Vidya and a surprise cameo do try to elevate the film but somewhere it falls short. A one time watch perhaps, but in all honesty, a good opportunity not grabbed properly.
