As international tourism and long-haul travel made a comeback this year, so too did the tradition of bingeing inflight movies at 38,000 feet.

But one movie – and one genre – stood out to fliers in particular, according to Qantas.

The airline has shared what customers were watching in 2022, with travellers collectively spending more than 60 million hours using the carrier’s inflight entertainment and Wi-Fi this year – doubling 2019 usage figures.

However, this year’s top inflight movies had a lot in common with 2019’s favourites, with blockbuster action flicks and reboots dominating passengers’ watch lists.

Top Gun: Maverick topped both Qantas’ and Virgin Australia’s movie charts, with more than 750,000 viewings on Qantas alone, despite only being released in September. In that first month alone, the Tom Cruise vehicle was viewed by an average of one in three customers, according to the airline, with passengers seemingly not put off by the film’s heart-racing opening plane crash sequence, that sees Cruise’s character disintegrate a hypersonic jet during an unauthorised test flight.

The award-winning sequel to the 1986 Top Gun film sees Cruise and Val Kilmer reprise their roles of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. Not only is it the most-viewed film in the air for 2022, but it’s also the highest-grossing film in theatres, becoming the 49th movie to earn $1 billion worldwide.

Qantas’ second most-watched inflight movie was No Time to Die, the final James Bond film starring Daniel Craig; Sandra Bullock’s action-comedy The Lost City; Brad Pitt’s assassin blockbuster Bullet Train; and biopic crime-drama House of Gucci starring Lady Gaga.

In 2019, Qantas’ top movies were the A Star is Born remake (also starring Lady Gaga), followed by superhero blockbuster Avengers: Endgame.

Virgin Australia customers also had a taste for onscreen action, with Spider-Man: No Way Home emerging as the second most-watched movie, followed by Dune, Uncharted, and The Suicide Squad.

This year’s number-one TV show was Succession, according to Qantas customers, with passengers spending more than 243,000 hours watching the series that follows the lives of the fictional wealthy media magnate Roy family, starring Brian Cox, Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin.

This was closely followed by the Sex and the City revival And Just Like That, and the Yellowstone prequel 1883, with each garnering about 200,000 hours.

In the inflight audio category, health and wellness proved popular with travellers, with meditation album 417 Hz Mindfulness by Miracle Tones and Solfeggio Healing Frequencies MT topping the audio charts – marking the first time a meditation audio has done so. Adele’s 30 emerged as the most-listened-to pop album.

Qantas’ Brisbane-Perth service was the most connected route, with 95 per cent of customers taking advantage of free inflight Wi-Fi – significantly higher than the network average of just over 60 per cent.

The results follow Qantas being named seventh in the global airline rankings for world’s best inflight entertainment at this year’s World Airline Awards. Emirates, United Airlines and Qatar Airways took out the top three spots in that category.

The Australian airline has made a number of improvements to its inflight offering this year, including the addition of a Paramount+ category for expanded streaming options. Qantas has also completed a wide roll out of inflight entertainment streamed to personal devices on QantasLink regional jets, as well as international and domestic services.

The use of inflight entertainment apps has grown significantly in recent years, as airlines increasingly improve their onboard Wi-Fi offerings and cut expenditure by doing away with heavy seatback entertainment screens.

Qantas has joined Virgin Australia and Jetstar in ditching seatback screens on many of its domestic flights, following an industry-wide trend to reduce weight and therefore fuel costs.
