While Meghan has since reconciled with Bey – and worked with him again in Ninja Turtles franchise – she went on to speak out about her experiences of misogyny in general before suffering a “psychological breakdown” and retreating from the spotlight due to widespread objectification by the media, industry and the internet.
“I wasn’t allowed to be human because I was the subject of conversation, gossip and retorts,” she tells me.
Although she still took on a few roles, her public appearances dried up, “I basically went into hiding for a few years of my life,” she says. But now she’s re-emerged on the post-#MeToo landscape, her status and career reexamined and re-evaluated and heralded as a feminist icon—though, she told me, not by everyone.
And this – I believe – is the most interesting and important reason why Megan Fox is having a moment right now.
We meet at a photography studio in Burbank, Los Angeles on a sunny spring Sunday morning CHARM concealment. Meghan drives herself to the set (she doesn’t like sitting in the back of cars) in her customized Range Rover after spending the first half of the morning doing weekend activities with her three children, Noah, nine, Bodhi, eight, and Journey , five, which she shares with her ex-husband O.G Beverly Hills 90210 actor Brian Austin Green.
She’s a petite 5ft 4in and dressed all in pink, from a baseball cap to a tracksuit to a Louis Vuitton bag, arriving with a small entourage, including her close friend, Hollywood super-stylist Maeve Riley (who also works with Hailey Bieber and family Kardashian) who shaped this fantastic cover photo.
From the start, Megan is friendly, easygoing and funny, making everyone feel at ease as she orders gluten-free toast with jam for breakfast. During our hour-long conversation, she is heartfelt and delivers unfettered honesty, at one point bringing her to tears as she broaches a particularly sensitive issue surrounding her oldest child, Noah. The emotion is raw and it leaves everyone in the room moved (more on that later.)
As she admits at the end of the interview, hers is undoubtedly one of the most “unfiltered” of all CHARMThe unfiltered interviews of so far, joking afterwards: “You might have to really filter it!”
I begin by asking her why she thinks her career—which includes recent thrillers Midnight in Switchgrass (where he met Machine Gun Kelly), Till death and Johnny and Clyde, black comedies A large gold brick and Good morning (written and directed by her fiancé) and an upcoming action film The Invincibles 4 – is there a renaissance at the moment?
“I think the first time I was faced with astronomical levels of fame, that in itself was kind of a trauma… And if you don’t have a big family or a big support system, it’s easy to get very overwhelmed or lose yourself in that,” says she. “And if you’re delicate at all, it’s hard to survive. So, I shut down a lot and withdrew from everything… Now I’m much better equipped to deal with it and experience it in a way where I can actually enjoy some of it and not be so self-conscious and scared of all time.”
