Liz Truss, the former foreign secretary and MP for South West Norfolk, has been chosen as England’s next prime minister and Tory leader. She will take on the role of Prime Minister and enter 10 Downing Street after meeting Queen Elizabeth II at Balmorals in Scotland.

After being declared the winner of the 1922 election by the commission’s chairman, Sir Graham Brady, Liz Truss addressed the crowd at the Queen Elizabeth II Center in London.

Here is the full text of her speech:

“I am honored to be elected leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party. I wish to thank the Chairman of the Committee since 1922, Sir Graham Brady. I want to thank the party team for organizing one of the longest job interviews in history.”

“I want to thank my family, friends and political colleagues. I want to thank Rishi Sunak.”

“The contest showed the breadth and depth of talent in our Conservative Party. I am incredibly grateful for your support. It was a tough race.”

“I want to thank our outgoing leader, my friend Boris Johnson. Boris, do Brexit. You crushed Jeremy Corbyn, you released the vaccine. And faced Vladimir Putin. You were delighted from Kyiv to Carlisle.

“Friends and colleagues, thank you for believing in me to lead our great Conservative Party. The Greatest Political Party on Earth. I know our beliefs resonate with the British people.

“Our beliefs in freedom, the ability to be in control of your own life, in low taxes and personal responsibility, and I know that’s why people voted for us in such large numbers in 2019. I intend to deliver on what we promised to those voters across the country .”

“During this leadership campaign, I campaigned as a Conservative and I will govern as a Conservative.”

“And my friends, we have to show that we’re going to deliver in the next two years.”

“I will present a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy.”

“I will deal with the energy crisis by dealing with people’s energy bills, but also with the long-term problems we have with energy supply.”

“And I’ll deliver to the NHS.”

“But we will all deliver for our country. And I will make sure we use all the fantastic talent of the Conservative Party, our brilliant MPs and peers, our fantastic councillors, our MSs, our MSPs, all our councilors and campaigners and members across our country. Because, my friends, I know that we will deliver, and deliver, and deliver.”

“And we will deliver a great victory for the Conservative Party in 2024. Thank you.”
