Law and order is going strong in Season 22 after returning earlier this year for a revival. The hit drama brought back former star Elizabeth Rohm (known for her role as ADA Serena Southerlyn during the series’ original run) to work behind the camera and direct an intense episode with strong focus on Odelya Halevi’s ADA Maroun. After her years as an actress in Law and order franchise and her recent return as a director, Rohm opened up about SVUMarishka Hargitay as a “power station” and how she herself would like to return.
Elizabeth Rom returned to Law and order to direct as part of NBCU LAUNCH Female Forward program, with some experience directing TV movies before moving to episodic network television. The November 10 episode was her first return to the franchise since four seasons as Serena Southerlyn ended in 2005. When she spoke with CinemaBlend about the directing experience, I asked if she’d be interested in directing as well SVU and Organized crime a day, and she called Marishka Hargitay a “powerhouse” of the franchise, saying:
Marishka Hargitay became the face of Law and order franchise, featuring SVU for more than 500 episodes and more than two decades. She also directed seven episodes of Law & Order: SVUso it’s safe to say that her collaboration with Elizabeth Rohm will bring together two women with extensive franchise experience in front of the camera as well as behind it.
Rohm went on to compliment Christopher Meloni by Organized crimeand mentioned the One Chicago show as three others placed in the same tv universe as Law and order series. The actress-turned-director is currently committed to NBC’s director’s program and shared that “working for them is exciting.” But now that she’s back to Law and order to direct, would she like to reprise her role as ADA Southerlyn? Rohm weighed in:
While Rom hasn’t ruled out reprising her role as one of the show’s previous assistant district attorneys, if creator Dick Wolf or showrunner Rick Eide ask, directing is how she would “love” to return in the future. She elaborated on her chances of returning as an actress versus returning as a director:
That being said Law and order it’s not even halfway through season 22, and it’s been a hit enough that it seems safe to say it’ll be renewed for season 23, there are plenty of episodes to come that Elisabeth Rohm could potentially direct after her first attempt at 10’s Only November The Lonely.”
Since this experience was so positive for her, I asked if there was anything she was particularly proud of after getting behind the camera on Law and order. She had two choices, starting with how she managed to work with Odelya Halevi. She said:
The Singles was a rough episode for Samantha Maroon, but Odelya Halevi shined as an actress under the spotlight. This was an episode that required the services of an intimacy coordinator, and Elizabeth Rohn stepped in why it was an essential part of the process. The director also pointed to a favorite part of the experience that didn’t involve Halevi, but instead an iconic actor from the series’ original run: history maker Sam Waterston. Rom said:
Interestingly, Odelya Halevi was too full of praise for Waterston as a colleague earlier this year. Elizabeth Rom and Law and order icon worked together regularly while she was on board to play ADA Southerlyn, and his support on her return clearly meant a lot to her. This episode was Rohm’s first television episode as a director and a big step for her in the directing stage of her career.
If you missed Elizabeth Rom’s episode of Law and ordercalled Only the Lonely, you can find it and more streaming now with a Peacock Premium Subscription. New episodes of the long-running drama will continue to air Thursdays at 8pm ET on NBC, but it’s not too early to check out 2023 TV Premiere Schedule when the biggest shows on TV will return in the new year.
