Katie Holmes broke the internet late last year when she donned a Y2K-inspired outfit to the 2022 Jingle Ball. And during today’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress addressed the wide debate over her controversial fashion choice, which had people second-guessing what year we’re living in.
Drew Barrymore pointed out that people were both “obsessed” and “contemplating” Holmes’ look, which paired a silky, sleeveless top with a pair of baggy jeans and sneakers. When she asked how the Dawson’s Creek alum made the decision to wear the outfit, she had a simple explanation.
“It’s like a corset, and so I threw it on with jeans,” she explained. “And I knew I wanted to dance there because I was going with my nephews so I threw my sneakers on and I thought I looked cool. I felt cool. I felt great.”
Holmes continued, “And then I woke up the next morning and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ I guess — I didn’t know that it was such a thing. I don’t think about it. I really don’t. I like to go and have fun.”
This wasn’t the first time Holmes’ clothing choices caused a stir. Back in 2019, the actress went viral after she sported a $520 cashmere bralette by the clothing company Khaite, which she wore with a $1,540 sweater from the same brand.
After Barrymore noted that she “paused the entire world, commenting on [her] top,” Holmes admitted she “didn’t” know it was going to be “such a thing.”
The Rare Objects director further explained her decision to wear the casual (but expensive) items while speaking to Vogue a few years back.
“It was very comfortable and easy and I think [Khaite] do such a good job with creating beautiful luxury items,” she told the outlet. “They are very accessible and classic so you can have it for a long time, and I like to shop that way. I’m not always buying new stuff and I can wear it again.”
