Cinema lovers in Kashmir are set for a real treat in the coming days as they will be watching a movie in a theatre for the first time in a theatre in 32 years. And it is not just any other movie theatre, but the moviegoers will be watching the new releases on the INOX screens, in the Valley’s first-ever multiplex experience.

“Inaugurated INOX multiplex theatre in Srinagar. Congratulations to the people, Sh. Vijay Dhar & INOX Group. A major socio-economic revolution is sweeping through J&K in the last 3 years,” Mr Sinha tweeted soon after inaugurating the multiplex. Speaking to the media persons after the inauguration, he said, “It is a reflection of a new dawn of hope, dreams, confidence and aspirations of people.”
Earlier, on Sunday (September 18), the Lieutenant Governor had inaugurated multipurpose cinema halls in Pulwama and Shopian as well.

The sale of tickets will start on September 26 (Monday), and the first show is slated for September 30 (Friday).
As the insurgency rose, all movie theatres in the Valley were shut down on December 31, 1989. In 1996, the Farooq Abdullah-led government made efforts in trying to reopen two of the most famous cinema halls in Srinagar — Broadway and Neelam. However, even they failed to survive due to poor patronage. Militants hurled a grenade in the iconic Regal Cinema in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk in September 1999 during the screening of Pyar Koyi Khel Nahi.
That something as close to “normalcy” as movies and entertainment could be thought of in Kashmir in itself speaks about how invested the BJP-led Centre governing the Union Territory is in trying to push out the vestiges of militancy and the horrors for the people of the Valley.

While that might be in 10 days from today, on the inaugural day it was Bollywood that ruled the roost. There was a special screening of Aamir Khan’s blockbuster Laal Singh Chaddha — a remake of Tom Hanks’s all-time classic Forrest Gump — for the Lieutenant Governor and other dignitaries, hosted by the multiplex management after the inauguration ceremony.
