Kantara, a Kannada film that unexpectedly took the global box office by storm, and its lead star Rishabh Shetty became the talk of the town. To give you an overview, the film has crossed the Rs 400 crore mark at the worldwide box office, becoming the only Canadian film to enter the Rs 400 crore club worldwide after another successful Canadian KGF Chapter 2 starring Yash. But how did Rishabh do this? Is there a recipe for success? Is there a mantra that other filmmakers aiming to make some of the biggest pan-India box office hits can take note of? The Kantara star bared all at the ongoing 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2022 in Goa. In a hosted masterclass on ‘Representing Cultural Diversity and Identifying New Markets’ moderated by veteran film producer TG Thyagarajan at IFFI, Rishabh Shetty spoke about the key aspect that made his film so relatable to audiences, cutting across any demographic or language barriers . Talking about the way Kantara was set, Rishabh Shetty shared that he used all the different elements that inspired him personally. It was from his experience and observations watching Tamil cinema and the finer nuances of the cultures that gave Kantara the form that was fluid enough to penetrate the hearts of the diverse audience that watched the film.

Giving another reason as to what he believes made the film such a huge success, Shetty opined, “Thanks to OTT, people are now watching films from all over the world, from all over the country.” He added that OTT has brought about the much-needed revolution where audiences are no longer limited to the language they are born in or know.

Kantara’s success is really encouraging for filmmakers who are creating regional cinema with a global aim. Interestingly, while Rishab Shetty is excited about the opportunities now opening up for cinema, he has decided to work only in the Kannada film industry as it is his Karma Bhoomi. However, he is all for dubbing the film in as many languages as possible if it is a hit and deserves a wider audience. We really hope to see more projects like this in the future that blur the divide between the different ‘forests’ that films come from and really define what the Indian film industry stands for.
