Hollywood director James Cameron returns to directing after 13 years with Avatar: The Last Airbender, which follows the story of his last game-changing directorial debut, 2009’s Avatar. The film not only received rave reviews in early media screenings, but also has garnered an amazing response on advance bookings. The visual spectacle is expected to register some historic numbers worldwide on its opening day.
According to reports, the film will release on December 16 in a whopping 50,000 screens worldwide, which is sure to dominate the box office. For the uninitiated, 2009’s Avatar was the highest-grossing release of all time with a collection of $2.9 billion worldwide.
According to trade experts, the first weekend box office estimates are pegged at a minimum of $150-175 million in North America. The film also celebrated its premiere in China, which will further increase the chances of making a profit. The film’s star-studded cast includes Kate Winslet, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Edie Falco and Jemaine Clement.
Talking about its release in India, the Avatar sequel is all set to take a huge opening by earning Rs 30-40 crore on Day 1, with an estimated opening weekend sale of 4,41,960 tickets. Also, there is a high possibility that the film may even cross the Rs 40 crore mark on Day 1.
The Avatar sequel is also expected to have an edge in the gameplay. Looking back at its previous competitors, Avatar part 1 enjoyed a huge response with over 9.80 crore hits, Avengers: Endgame recorded 9.55 crore hits while Star Wars – The Force Awakens recorded 10.90 crore hits.
Considering the huge number of advance and expected spot bookings, Avatar: The Way of Water is estimated to earn a minimum of Rs 300 crore in its entire run at the Indian box office. The film is expected to become the second biggest release after Avengers Endgame which collected Rs 370 crore in India alone.
The sequel takes place more than a decade after the events of its predecessor and tells the story of the “Sully family” (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the troubles that follow them, the efforts they make to protect each other, the battles they fight , to stay alive, and the tragedies they experience, according to the synopsis.
