Jabba’s Movies: Black Adam | Sunrise

It’s no wonder Hollywood keeps betting on superheroes, with the genre making up three of the top five films at the Australian box office so far in 2022.

May’s Doctor Strange sits just behind March’s The Batman, while July’s Thor: Love And Thunder takes out the third spot.

Now get ready to rumble once more, with a new superhero in town – and he’s just debuted to the best opening result since Thor: Love And Thunder.

Black Adam stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a slave who is bestowed with mighty powers.

After 5,000 years of imprisonment, he is unleashed into modern times where he attracts the attention of the Justice Society of America.

Assembling the cast

Best remembered for his stint in a number of James Bond films, Pierce Brosnan actually turned down the opportunity to audition for the role of Tim Burton’s Batman years ago.

But he felt now was the right time to don a cape to play Justice Society’s head honcho.

“I think Dr Fate met me at the right time in life,” Brosnan said.

“I really enjoyed portraying this character, Kent Nelson, who becomes Dr Fate.

“He is one of the oldest characters in the DC pantheon of characters – a much-loved character, a powerful sorcerer, and just the sheer enjoyment of making the movie with the company of actors that I was with, I would certainly love to go ahead and make another one should that opportunity arise.”

Aldis Hodge, who plays Carter Hall aka Hawkman, enjoyed the chance to carve out his own niche in the superhero universe.

“I grew up fighting so, for me, being able to create something in this space … there’s a real opportunity there to introduce something new,” Hodge said.

“It does take a great deal of forethought, because you have to be as specific with the movement as you are with the words, as you are with the backstory, as you are with however you portray this character – you have to craft it.”

Noah Centineo stars as Albert ‘Al’ Rothstein/Atom Smasher, a young Justice Society member who can control his molecular structure and manipulate his size and strength.

“What’s funny about Smasher, when he is Albert he seems very confident, very sure of himself, very capable,” Centineo said.

“Then when he puts on the suit, he becomes helpless. … even though he has this enormous amount of power, he doesn’t quite know how to use it at the beginning of the film.”

Centineo’s partner in Justice is Quintessa Swindell, playing Maxine Hunkel/Cyclone, a member of the JSA who can control wind and generate sound.

“Cyclone is the version and the side of Maxine that she probably wishes she had in her everyday life,” Swindell said.

“So everything becomes fiercer and more pointed and almost like dangerous in a way … I feel like that’s like a side of Maxine that she only gets to have in that space and get away with in that space.”

After being imprisoned for thousands of years, Black Adam is initially discovered by treasure hunting brother and sister duo Karim & Adrianna played by Mo Amer and Sarah Shahi.

“We are the common folk, we are the citizens of Kahndaq and we are leading this rebellion against Intergang, this very oppressive society that’s come in and just wants to take away our freedoms and our rights,” Shahi said.

“When Black Adam appears, as much as we’re deathly afraid of him and afraid he’s gonna turn us into fried pieces of chicken, we need him to stay because he’s our only chance at defeating Intergang.”

Taking direction

It’s the second time director Jaume Collet-Serra has worked with Johnson, after the pair collaborated on 2021’s Jungle Cruise.

“It’s been definitely a long journey, but we love it,” Collet-Serra said.

“We love working with each other – his physical transformation has been incredible.”

Johnson reportedly “ripped up” the initial costume for his character, instead vowing to hit the gym in a bid to bulk up for his first superhero role.

As for the director’s preparation, “I read every comic that I could, especially Black Adam.”

But he didn’t necessarily feel the need to watch every DC movie already made.

“I’ve seen what I’ve seen,” he explained.

“I didn’t go out of my way to watch other things because every movie is different … if we want to make a movie where Black Adam is an anti-hero, what’s most appropriate is to reference other anti-hero movies like Dirty Harry … or any movie with revenge.”

Black Adam is in cinemas now.
