Veteran actor-director Rakesh Roshan, who turns 73 today, talks about why Bollywood films flop one after the other. He said that today’s filmmakers choose subjects that are not suitable for the general audience and therefore cannot be connected. He also said that the original songs were downplayed from a film that had played a major role in making the actors superstars in the past.
The actor-director told Bollywood Hungama that songs are an integral part of Bollywood films. He cited examples of recent pan-Indian films like Pushpa and RRR and how their every song became a rage, adding that Bollywood should learn from them. He further said that Bollywood filmmakers are trying to make “so-called modern cinema” that works with only one percent of the population. “A lot of the audience can’t relate to that,” he added.
Roshan said that earlier there were 6 songs in the film, now there are hardly any songs depicted on actors. He said that these songs helped make actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna superstars. Without songs, Roshan said that it has become very difficult to become a superstar now.
He also said that southern films still choose themes that are rooted in their culture and show them on the big screen in a larger-than-life manner. It helps people relate to the subject matter and gets them excited to see these movies in theaters.
Franchise director Krrish said that earlier songs were used to promote films and then the trailer was released to create more excitement. He said that in this day and age, multi-city and feverish promotions serve no purpose. He called it a waste of money and there was no point in doing it. He added that if the teaser or trailer of the film did not work, then the big promotional activities will not attract the audience to the theatres.
