Great American Ghost was released last week A world of tortureA 4 track EP as brutal as its title suggests.

The 2020 follow-up to the Boston band Power through terror album, the new record was produced by Will Putney (Knocked Loose, Every Time I Die) and finds vocalist Ethan Harrison penning lyrics that reflect the personal turmoil he’s been through during the pandemic.

Although Great American Ghost is in the middle of a US tour with Fit For An Autopsy, Ingested, Enterprise Earth and Signs of the Swarm, Ethan still took a moment to talk to No Echo about his struggles and how he found a way to going through them, how music listeners categorize his band, and the logistics of being on the road during the pandemic.

I’ve read that the pandemic and lockdown have had a huge impact on your mental state. How did you deal with it and what did you learn about yourself during this time?

[Laughs] I went to therapy! It was a long process, unnecessarily difficult and expensive thanks to our health care system, but I made it work because I knew I needed to. I used this group as my only creative outlet for an extremely long time and it allowed me to simultaneously push aside a lot of past trauma and issues.

So after being completely shut down for two years, I had a lot to deal with. I tried to make it the best I could.

I don’t know if I would have made it without the help of therapy. It may not be the answer for everyone, but I truly believe that everyone should try. We all have things to overcome and no one should be ashamed of that.

You touched on the topic of the label of the genre and how it relates to Great American Ghost over the years. Do you think people are too concerned about such things? Do you feel like it’s not as prevalent as it used to be, with more young people who maybe didn’t grow up worrying about genre names and all that?

It has certainly improved. I really don’t listen to these conversations that much anymore, and when I make the mistake of reading reviews of our music, I feel like the community as a whole has accepted that we don’t care what box we’re put in.

All we care about is making art we believe in and connecting with people who feel connected to our music. That’s it. Call us what you will.

You are currently in the middle of a US tour. How different has it been logistically? Is it much harder? Have you noticed any difference in the way crowds act/react?

It is completely different. The tour is all business right now, not to say it’s not always like that, but this tour is the most focused tour I’ve ever been on. No one can afford to be sloppy and get sick. No one wants to put anyone at risk.

I wouldn’t say it’s “harder”, I’d say it’s a bit more oozing. Your consciousness is always up. I think the crowds are also trying to be safe and careful. Participation carries a note of caution. I think by and large we all now realize how fleeting it is and how lucky we are. We don’t want to lose this again.
