Raipur: The 13-yr-old Bastar boy Yuvraj Singh has become the only Chhattisgarhia to represent India at the 2022 IFMA (International Federation of Muaythai Associations) Muay Thai Youth World Championships organised at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 9 to 20, in the U-14 group. Yuvraj, a class IX student of Deepti convent higher secondary school in Jagdalpur, Bastar, had flown to Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
Yuvraj, who has also been consistent in his study by scoring 70-75% in the annual examinations, started taking interest in wrestling at the age of 7-8 inspired by bollywood movies like ‘Sultan’ and ‘Dangal’. Yuvraj told his father Rajendra Singh, a businessman by profession that he wants to become wrestler and remained firm on his words, said Yuvraj’s coach Abdul Moin who used to train children in judo, karate and muay thai. “Yuvraj’s father came to me one day and told me about the interest of his son. As I had no facility for wrestling I suggested him to go for judo or the other two games which I coach. Yuvraj was around 7-8 years old when he came to me for the first time,” said the coach.
Yuvraj stepped in the rings for the first time in a state muay thai championship organised at Dallirajhara in 2018-19 when he was 8 to 9-years-old and won a gold in the first go making his intention clear, said the coach. Since then, Yuvraj has never looked back and won five gold medals in state level championships and equal number of gold in the national competitions.
Sharing the secret behind Yuvraj’s success, the coach said Yuvraj never misses practice sessions. Moreover, his family members encourage him a lot and travel with him wherever he plays the matches. Grandmother of Yuvraj cheered him from the front row and even wore gloves to fight with her grandson for motivation, the coach said. Yuvraj is participating in the 71+ weight category of his age group at the world championship, he added.
Rajendra Singh, father of Yuvraj, told TOI that this world youth championship is the first international event for his son and therefore he is accompanying him during the trip.
