I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star Chris Moyles has opened up about his controversial BBC exit to fellow campmate Matt Hancock.
Moyles was the host of BBC Radio 1’s breakfast show from 2004 to 2012 when he was controversially ousted from the programme and replaced by Nick Grimshaw.
Moyles was asked about his exit from the breakfast show by Hancock and, in the diary hut, Moyles said he was warming to Hancock and didn’t mind sharing the experience with him. In particular, Hancock asked if Moyles knew the end was coming.

“I knew that Radio 1 is a conveyor belt and you might be there for a year or you might be there for 15 years, but you’re going to fall off the end at some point,” Moyles said.
“I left happy. I was a bit cross after I left. They handled it so badly. So badly.”
Moyles continued: “So I went in with my agent and the controller and we sit down and he goes, ‘Look, this isn’t very easy, I think it’s time we wrapped the show up. We’re going to announce in the news at half 10 that Nick Grimshaw’s taking over.'”

Moyles said that his agent and the controller quickly descended into an argument about Moyles’ treatment before Moyles himself stepped in and put a stop to the heated confrontation. Moyles insisted he wanted to announce he was leaving the show himself.
“I said to the boss, ‘You can’t do that.’ He goes, ‘Well if we don’t do that, it’ll get out.’ I said, ‘Well up until 60 seconds ago, I didn’t know about it. So, after 15 years, you can’t do that. I have to announce that I’m coming off the breakfast show and we have to work out what’s happening,'” Moyles said.

However, Moyles said that the next day he finished his usual show at 10am and they announced Moyles was leaving at 10.30am. Moyles assured Hancock it wasn’t all bad, however, as he was given a lengthy stint on the show post-announcement before he officially left.
“They gave us three months to say goodbye, which was great. So I said, ‘You know, thanks for everything, cheers,'” Moyles said. He explained that he then took a year off work and spent a month in Los Angeles with friends. Soon after, in LA, he met his now-partner Tiff.
“Everything happens for a reason,” Moyles added.
I’m a Celebrity airs at 9pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
