I’d rather lose the Tory leadership race than win on a false promise

“It’s all very well to offer empty words about ‘doing your best.’ But there aren’t many different ways to go about it. Taking action means providing direct support, which Truss had previously dismissed as “handouts,” campaign spokesman Sunak said.

“Twice now Truss has made a serious moral and political misjudgment on a policy affecting millions of people, after last week she canceled plans to cut teachers’ and armed forces’ pay outside London. Mistakes like this in government will cost the Conservative Party the next general election.

A scorched earth policy

The scathingly personal nature of the attacks led to questions about whether the two finalists could actually serve in each other’s cabinet, with both Mr Sunak and Ms Truss saying they would if offered the role.

A senior Labor source told The Telegraph that the blue-on-blue attacks represented a “scorched earth” policy that harmed the Conservative Party and benefited the Labor Party.

On Wednesday, sources in both the Rishi and Truss campaigns said the candidates had no plans to change the income tax thresholds.

This comes despite the Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank predicting an extra £30 billion a year will be taken in tax as inflation pushes millions of people into higher income tax brackets.

Mr Sunak indicated in his BBC interview that he would sign off on billions of pounds of extra spending to help households hardest hit by rising energy costs if he wins.

However, he suggested the financial support package would not be like the around £15bn he announced as chancellor in May.

Mrs Truss indicated she would appoint Kemi Badenoch, the former communities secretary who did better than expected in the Tory leadership race, to the cabinet if she wins.

The foreign secretary said “I think she is brilliant, I would definitely want her as part of my team”, stressing that it would be a presumption to make any appointment decisions at this stage.
