Feroze Jahan Begum wore a handspun Khadar (khadi) dupatta on the day of her wedding day. She says it is an heirloom usually worn by the brides in the family of the last Nizam of Hyderabad Mir Usman Ali Khan. “I didn’t think much of it at the time.”
Feroze Jahan Begum is the great-granddaughter of Mir Usman Ali Khan and she is now trying to revive the fashion of Nizam’s era.
As a young bride, Feroze Jahan Begum didn’t think much of her dupatta. However, later, she realized its value; she also felt the need to protect her family heritage and revive it and introduce the same to the public.
She claims to be working hard to not only respect her family and Hyderabad’s heritage but also to reinvent fashion based on the trend of those days.
Taking a cue from Mehboob Ali Pasha, the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, who played a key role in the evolution of the modern Sherwani, Feroze Jahan believed that modern fashion could also be taken to the bygone era for revival.
Feroze Jahan Begum’s mission will soon see her tour the country, trying to find out how restored palaces across India preserve the remnants of past ruling royal families.
Apart from promoting heritage and history, Feroze Jahan Begum will also do a photo shoot in which she will wear a khadar dupatta in the backdrop of historical monuments and old architecture at various locations.
“It worries me that with each passing generation we are losing touch with Hyderabad’s history,” she says. If this trend continues, soon it would become difficult to value things of historical importance and this thought is disturbing. I aim to protect the neglected architecture and culture that Hyderabad has to offer,” she says.
Feroze Jahan Begum recently met the members of the erstwhile royal family of Bhopal. Soon she would leave for Bengaluru to meet others.
Obaidullah Khan and Hamidullah Khan are descendants of Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum. They also promoted the Hyderabadi culture, food, clothing, and history while talking about Mir Usman Ali Khan Bahadur and his services.
Feroze Jahan Begum says that no matter how fast fashion changes, we want to go back to the precious clothes of India.

“All major designers find their way into vintage and antique designs. I strongly feel the desire to connect with this style of clothing. It comes with its cultural milieu and exemplifies the sophistication of the royal family.”
