Met Gala 2023 is only a few days away and fans are excited to see their favourite celebrities in different looks. The event will take place on May 1 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year, the theme of the Met Gala is ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’. Karl Otto Lagerfeld was a German fashion designer, creative director, artist and photographer. He was known as the creative director of the French fashion house Chanel, a position held from 1983 until his death. Moreover, he was also the creative director of the Italian fur and leather goods fashion house ‘Fendi’ and his own eponymous fashion label. He collaborated on a variety of fashion and art-related projects.
Process of choosing a theme:
Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s chief curator, is the man deciding the theme of the Met Gala every year. Meanwhile, talking about the process of selecting a theme, Bolton revealed that he works on a topic that seems timely and defines a cultural shift that’s happening or is about to happen.
“We always try to have a menu of shows that are dynamic, that go back and forth on subjects from the past and the present, between thematic shows and monographic ones of a single designer. We try to mix it up,” Bolton told Vogue France. After Bolton and his team discuss the theme and are satisfied with it, they present it to the museum’s director and president for approval. For the unversed, the approval process takes place about a year in advance and research also happens years in advance.
After getting approval from the museum’s director and president, Anna Wintour, Condé Nast editorial director and editor-in-chief of American Vogue, comes into the picture. Bolton told Vogue France that Wintour suggests what sponsors would be appropriate for the exhibition and supports the team in other ways as well.
This year, the cost of the tickets to the ‘2023 Met Gala’ is reportedly $50,000, which is a significant rise of around $20,000 from the cost of the tickets the previous year. Priyanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt will be attending Met Gala this year.
