The final stage in the recruitment process for bank exams is usually the personal interview. Candidates who have reached this stage should be justifiably proud of themselves – but they should treat the interview with due seriousness, as even small details can turn out to be a failure.
Chief among the points to remember when preparing for an interview is how to dress. Professional attire and a well-groomed appearance make a good first impression on panel members and are likely to tip the balance in your favor. In this article, we share some key dressing and grooming tips for both male and female bank interview candidates.
Male candidates
Hair and beard
Hair should be well trimmed and cut short or medium length. Ideally, schedule a haircut a few days before the interview.
Hair products like gel or spray are optional, but can add a glossy look and keep flyaways in place. However, avoid using too much as this can result in a sticky or unnaturally stiff appearance.
Your face should be either clean-shaven or have a well-kept, properly trimmed beard and/or moustache. The stubble is a strict no.
Clothing
Men’s attire should be a button-down shirt made of pure cotton in a light color such as white, pale blue or pale pink, paired with well-fitting dark trousers in shades such as black, brown or navy blue.
If you wear a blazer, it should match the shade of your pants. Be sure to invest in a well-fitting blazer, as a poor fit can ruin your entire look.
Make sure your shirt, pants, and blazer are free of patterns or textures of any kind.
Keep your shirt sleeves buttoned up to the wrist.
Wear well-polished formal leather shoes, preferably with laces. The color should be black or brown.
An important addition is a leather belt matching the color of the shoes.
If you do wear a tie, keep it plain or with a very minimalistic design. Choose one with a dark, rich color, such as a deep violet, rather than a bright purple. Wear it so that it ends just above the belt.
Match the color of your socks to your pants or shoes.
Accessories
Wear an analog watch with a leather strap, not a digital or smart watch.
Keep your nails trimmed and filed.
Carry a handkerchief with you.
Make sure all tattoos are properly covered. Remove rings from any piercings you may have.
If you wear rings on your fingers, either take them off or be prepared to answer questions about them.
Wear a mild deodorant to keep you smelling fresh throughout the interview.
Candidates

Tie your hair neatly into a ponytail or braid. You can use gel or hair spray to control the stray hairs in the front.
If your hair is shorter than your shoulders, you can leave it open. However, be sure to comb and tame it well so that it looks elegant.
Makeup
Makeup is optional, but a light application of makeup can enhance your overall look. Ideally, stick to eyeliner/kajal and nude lip shades.
Any additional makeup should only be applied if you are confident how to handle the makeup products, otherwise it can look clunky.
Avoid any kind of heavy, messy makeup.
Avoid wearing nail polish.
Clothing
Women have more options than men when it comes to clothing, with both Indian and Western clothing being acceptable.
A plain cotton saree can be worn as long as it is neatly draped and pinned at the right places.
Simple salwar-kameez or kurta-leggings combinations can be worn as long as they have minimal embroidery and fit well. Avoid any bright colors – choose pastels or neutrals instead. If the kurta is collared you don’t need to wear the dupatta, otherwise you should wear a plain cotton one.
Women may wear shirts, trousers and blazers in the same manner as described above for male applicants. They can also bet on a fitted skirt, but it should fall below the knee and not be tight.
Accessories
An analog wristwatch should be worn, not digital or smart watches.
Earrings should be simple in design, preferably with studs.
Make sure that no neck accessories are visible (hidden under the dupatta or tucked into the shirt).
Wear flat shoes, preferably with closed toes. You can also wear leggings with low heels.
Do not carry a handbag or purse that is too large.
Make sure any tattoos or piercings are covered. You can wear a nose stud, but not a flashy one.
If you wear rings on your fingers, either take them off or be prepared to answer questions about them.
Wear a mild perfume to keep you smelling fresh throughout the interview.
In short, the rule of thumb when it comes to dressing for interviews is to keep it simple, choose muted colors and wear well-fitting, comfortable clothes. Dressing smart goes a long way in winning over the interview pool, so make sure you take the necessary time to look neat and well-groomed before entering the interview room. All the best!
