You could say so Dr. Ben Songthe last leap of A quantum leap was out of the frying pan and into the fire, especially given the setting of the Family Style restaurant. Ben found himself in the body of the daughter of a restaurant worker whose family’s Indian restaurant was struggling to stay afloat after her father’s death. The hour had all the makings of a great episode that fans, foodies, and this is partly due to the way the executive producer and director Deborah Pratt downloaded from The bear and Jon Favreau‘c cook for inspiration.
Deborah Pratt co-wrote the original A quantum leap and is currently executive producing the revival. She also directed the latest episode, “Family Style,” and was kind enough to break down the episode for CinemaBlend in an interview. Pratt talks about filming the kitchen scenes and how she had the crew work to create footage that is similar to some of the most iconic cooking show and movie scenarios out there:
I got to be in this great, great kitchen with three cameras. I kept telling everybody, “Okay, here’s what’s going to happen. Every time we do a setup, break the C camera and go shoot the flames that appear. Everything from, you know, The Bear to The Chef. In every food show you’ve ever seen, I’ve said I want to have that sense of what it’s like to be in a kitchen.
The bear and cook are two of the best options when it comes to creating an episode involving food. It’s cool that he likes the series A quantum leap can draw from memorable works that have nothing to do with science fiction and use that inspiration to bring a more authentic feel to its weekly adventures.
Indian food played a big role in A quantum leap episode, but there was a lot to get through. The episode also touches on Ben’s past trauma of his mother’s death. plus, Ian was confronted by the team for a possible traitor and viewers got to witness some of the problems that immigrants face when they come to a new country. Deborah Pratt talks about how everything comes together to make a great episode of the NBC series:
I read the script and I was like, “Oh my God. This is a real quantum leap. It has heart, it has humor, it has history, it has hope. There’s a great personal story about Ben and a great timely story with immigration. What is it like to be an immigrant family from another country trying to make it in America? I was excited to be able to direct it and bring all those threads together.
In the end, Ben was able to pull it all together and move on to his next jump. Viewers saw Ben transported to a naval ship where he would come into contact with a man with a very personal connection to his actual life. The rookie and Arrowverse alum Brandon Routh will join the series to star Addisonthe father of. It’s a big leap from Indian food to naval war games, but if any series can pull it off, it’s this one A quantum leap. Personally, I’m curious if this next adventure will bring us any closer to understanding why Ben jumped and how that relates to an immediate threat involving Addison.
