How Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s Danai Gurira Prepared for Grief and ‘Drastic’ Change for Okoye

SPOILER ALERT: The following article contains major spoilers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, proceed at your own risk!

in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Okoye takes one emotional gut punch after another. The film opens with the death of King T’Challa – the man she swore to protect and guard at all costs – and while on duty to protect Princess Shuri on an overseas mission afterwards, she is devastated again when the young royal is kidnapped . And as if the circumstances weren’t bad enough, she becomes the target of Queen Ramonda’s wrath and is stripped of her role as commander of the Dora Milache.

It’s all heavy material for the character’s arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is the product of a close partnership between Danai Gurira and writer/director Ryan Coogler.

Before the theatrical release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever last month I had the opportunity to discuss Okoye’s journey in the film with Gurira at the Marvel blockbuster press conference in Los Angeles. I asked about her work with Ryan Coogler in charting the character’s path in the final chapter of her story. Dancing around spoilers, she explained,

There’s been a lot of talk around her arc and how we get her there and the journey she’s on. We knew there was going to be something pretty drastic that was going to happen to her in this movie, and you know what it’s really about, what’s underneath that? You know, pretty much her position… because there’s a lot of elements of where the grief is and how it hits different members of this ensemble in different ways. So where exactly does it hit her and how does it fare?

As established earlier in black Panther and the last two The Avengers Okoye is passionate about her responsibilities in the world of Wakanda, and it’s a crushing blow to her in the new film when Queen Ramonda takes away her role in the Dora Milaje. (This is one of the most amazing scenes in the movie, and one that came from the great collaboration between Danai Gurira and Angela Bassett.)

Continuing, Gurira emphasized her character’s personal need for control, noting that part of her process is correctly determining what events will lead her to do:

She is the type of person who is very controlling and likes to be that way. She obviously cares about protecting the nation. So it’s really understandable how that becomes what she ends up doing—because she’s a performer—feeling that control is preserved. But does she take care of herself?

Those who have seen the movie know that Okoye is not just sitting on the sidelines after losing her ranking position. Although it is unclear what her exact status with the Dora Milaje is at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forevershe’s especially suited for a superpowered role in the third act of the blockbuster – wearing the armor of the Midnight Angel from the comics.

And it wasn’t all just broad strokes. Danai Gurira noted that she worked closely with Ryan Coogler on every line of dialogue creation Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – taking full control of her franchise role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She added,

All of those things were very much discussed throughout, and just the little elements of what she would say, what she wouldn’t say, all those little things about what comes out of her mouth was always something that we explored very, very much. , very, very thoroughly.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premiered over a month ago, but continues to be the top film at the box office and is still playing in theaters everywhere.
