How Bill Hader Helped Write the Best Kanye West Joke Ever

If anyone needs a reminder, Kanye West is on a bit of a personal slide. If by “personal downfall” you mean “loss of billions of dollars because of his anti-Semitic remarks” then yes, he’s slipping a bit. But lost in the shuffle, of course because it’s less important than the persecution of the Jews, is the realization that Ye still doesn’t understand South Park fish stick joke.

In case you missed it, 2009 South Park episode “Fish Sticks” refers to a joke that everyone in the world understands except Kanye West. However, due to his huge ego, Kanye refuses to listen to anyone explain the joke to him. Ironically, Cartman claims to have defeated an entire army of “Jewbots” as well, which makes it an odd revision in light of West’s recent comments. Ultimately, West believes he is destined to become a gay fish as he enjoys “fish sticks”.

West was initially receptive to the joke, but later interviews began unusually covering the episode when West couldn’t fully explain the main point and what it meant. He responded with a song, on Watch the Throne’s “Gorgeous,” “Life of the Party,” and “Made in America,” so it’s clear West is still busy deciphering the enigma that is “fish sticks.” .

The original South Park the joke is credited to creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, but another famous comedian helped create the accent: Bill Hader. Hader was a creative consultant and producer of South Park when “Fish Sticks” originally aired and when he sat down with The New Yorker in 2014, he explained the impetus behind the prank.

“The first episode I worked on with them was the one with Kanye West called ‘Fish Sticks,'” Hader revealed. “They have these retreats, South Park retire and stay in a nice hotel and then wake up in the morning go to an apartment and just talk about South Park ideas… That’s where we came up with “Fish Sticks” because we were watching these salmon come up, and then Matt was like, “What if one of them was just on an Evel Knievel bike?”

That initial idea grew into the “Fish Rod” joke, but only because Hader claims he originally mistook “fish dick” for “fish rod.” “Trey turned around and said, ‘Has anyone ever pulled a prank like that?'” says Hader. “He got really excited. And he said, “Who can be someone who has no sense of humor that we can make fun of? Who is the only person in the world who wouldn’t have a sense of humor?” And in unison we said “Kanye West!”
