Watching movies at home can’t be beat—especially during “No Sky July.” The convenience of pressing pause for bathroom breaks or answering the door for the pizza guy. And microwaving Orville Redenbacher doesn’t has its charm when thinking about the cost of concession stand popcorn.
But it’s summer, and that means blockbusters. So head out to see a film the way its director intended: In a room full of strangers, on a huge screen with booming sound.
There are plenty to choose from: There’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Barbie to Oppenheimer and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One. Likewise, there are many theaters to see these big-name flicks or take in repertory films.
The Richmond District’s 4 Star reopened last summer, and despite the controversy over seating, the historic Castro Theatre still shows films—just not as many. However, CGV Cinemas on Van Ness Avenue, one of the largest in the city, closed in February. And the Century San Francisco Centre 9 and XD in Westfield’s San Francisco Centre shuttered on June 16 shortly after Nordstrom announced it would close the mall’s anchor department store on July 1.
