CLEVLAND, Ohio– Voting was in the news Tuesday, Dec. 6, but not just because of that hotly contested George run-off election for one of the state’s U.S. Senate seats. Pop culture had its power-to-the-people moment, too, with the People’s Choice Awards, one of the only awards shows where the public selects the winners.
Actors, musicians, and other entertainers joined together to celebrate the annual affair last night, showing off their most exciting ensembles while walking the red carpet at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif.
Instead of the traditional “red carpet,” this year’s award show decided to go in a different direction — purple.
From Laverne Cox and Shania Twain to Lizzo and Billy Porter, some stars used this moment to make a statement, while others were presumably there to enjoy the vibe.
The night was full of quite of few standout moments, including Shania Twain, who took the stage, performing a medley of her greatest hits, where she shouted out Ryan Reynolds.
During Twain’s performance of her iconic song, 1997′s “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” which famously contains the lyric, “OK, so you’re Brad Pitt? That don’t impress me much,” the country singer swapped mention of Pitt for Ryan Reynolds, causing a hilarious reaction in the audience.
Another significant moment happened as Lizzo accepted two awards that night, one for her single “About Damn Time” and the People’s Champion Award.
During her acceptance speech, Lizzo took the time to highlight several activists (whom she brought on stage with her), including Mari Copeny, Shirley Raines, Yasmine Aker, Emiliana Guereca, Esther Lim, Felicia “Fe” Montes, Jayla Sullivan, Kara Roselle Smith, Maggie Mireles, Amelia Bonow, Odilia Romero, Tarlan Rabizadeh, Sahar Pirzada, Chandi Moore, Crystal Echo Hawk, Reshma Saujani and Tamika Palmer.
