On Tuesday, November 15, Griswold High School’s business department hosted mock interviews for juniors and seniors. Students dressed for success and met with local volunteers to practice job interviewing skills.
Each scheduled interview gives students the opportunity to answer common interview questions, ask questions about future jobs, and have their resumes and cover letters reviewed. Students talked about their experiences in classes, leadership positions, athletics, extracurricular activities, work and volunteering to show why they would be great for a job they expressed interest in.
All participating eleventh and twelfth graders are currently enrolled in the Personal Finance Capstone course at Griswold High School. The 2022-2023 school year is the first school year in which the new graduation program is in place for all four grades, but mock interviews have been held at Griswold High School for more than 20 years.
“It allows students to showcase their skills to potential employers by creating their resume, gathering references, requesting letters of recommendation, completing an application and writing a cover letter,” GHS business teacher Joden Bromley said in a release. “This is the first step in transitioning our students’ skills from high school to the workforce. We are preparing our students for their future.”
Community members volunteer their time one morning during the fall and spring semesters to interview students for real-world jobs in a range of industries they may be interested in. This year’s interviewers were: Tech Sgt. Daniel Wool, US Air Force Recruiter; Hector Sanchez, Youth Workforce Development Program Coordinator at EASTCONN & EWIB; Eileen Ego, CT Department of Transportation; Missy Waite, branch manager at Jewett City Savings Bank; Mike Minarski, owner/operator of SNSN Radio; John Murphy, consultant with the Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board (EWIB), and Mary Brown, manager of volunteer and guest services at Backus Hospital
