Here are some entertainers who died this year.
We listen to their music, watch their shows on TV and many South Africans become attached to the celebrities they have come to love.
Death is unavoidable and sometimes when a celebrity dies you can get hurt and the pain cuts deep as if you knew them personally even though you had never met them.
This year, these are some of the celebrity deaths that shocked us:
Patrick Shai
One day he had released a statement apologizing for a video in which he had disrespected rapper Cassper Nyovest and his mother. Then the next things fans heard was that his wife found him hanging in their garage in January. He was 65 years old. They had been together for 40 years. One of their three children had to take him down, as he hanged leaning against his wife’s car.
Kuli Roberts
She died unexpectedly in February. A close friend, who was with Kuli (49) the day before she died told Drum the author and TV presenter was perfectly fine when they parted ways.
“I am not okay. I am devastated!” he says.
“I don’t even know where to start. I was with her on Tuesday and in the morning Wednesday at 6 am, we were laughing about her wig and her going bald for a shoot she was doing. She was okay, she was not sick.”
Riky Rick
Rapper and businessman Rikhado “Riky Rick” Makhodo (34) died on Wednesday 23 February.
He had been open about battling depression for years and just weeks before his much-loved CottonFest, he took his own life.
Siyabonga Zubane
He was new on the acting scene, but viewers fell in love with him when he played Sdumo on Gomora. His colleagues raved about how kind he was and that he would be missed on their set. In May, Siyabonga’s aunt Nomvula told Drum his housemates found him in bed and took him to the hospital after contacting his family. He was 23 years old.
“We don’t really know if it was suicide, but there are no signs. We are still waiting for the postmortem. He was found him in bed nonresponsive,” she said at the time.
Jamie Bartlett
The TV villain died aged at 55. He was an award-winning actor was also a judge on the reality competition show SA’s Got Talent. He died of cardiac arrest in May. His family announced in a statement that he took his last breath in his sleep while surrounded by his loved ones.
Deborah Fraser
She was ill and has been wheelchair bound after recent health complications.
She was hopeful that she would get better and be back on stage doing what she loves; healing people through music.
In May, her family released a statement saying she died following a short illness. She passed away in the presence of her family and friends. She was 56 years old.
Busi Lurayi
The How to Ruin Christmas actress Busi Lurayi passed on in her Johannesburg home. The award winning star, 35, died unexpectedly in July. A friend of hers told Drum that the cause of death was unknown.
“She was working on two productions and started feeling ill,” the friend told Drum at the time.
“She took days off from work and was supposed to be in a play. I don’t know what happened. We could not reach her, and she was found after a few days at home, alone, and they had to break the door.”
Don Mattera
The legendary poet, writer and anti-apartheid activist died in July, aged 86. He had a mild stroke in December and his health deteriorated after that. He died peacefully at his home in Protea Glen, Soweto, while talking to his ex-wife, Melody.
He was Muslim, so that meant he had to be buried on the same the day he died.
Mncedisi Shabangu
The Rhythm City and theatre stage performer died in July. He was at his home in Mpumalanga and took his last breath after complaining about having chest pains. He was 53 years old.
Thabo ‘Crazy T’ Tsotetsi
The musician and Alaska Kwaito group member was as one of two remaining members of the Alaska kwaito group.
He was working on his solo project, running a successful hair salon and gearing up for performances at this year’s biggest kwaito event happening in October. He died in September, aged 57.
Pearl Shongwe
The TV and radio personality died in her sleep, alone in her Johannesburg home, her family revealed.
Pearl (35) died unexpectedly in November.
