Sunny Deol’s Reveals Movie Production Leaves Him ‘Bankrupt’: ‘Gadar 2’ star Sunny Deol has revealed that he is concluding his involvement in producing and directing films. During a recent conversation with BBC Asian Network, Sunny expressed that he faces financial challenges every time he takes on the role of a producer, leading him to declare his decision to step back. He attributed this choice to the evolving landscape of film production and his recognition of his limitations in multitasking within the industry.
“The world has become very difficult. Years back, I could control things because distribution was normal. They were people we interacted with. There was a connection. Ever since the corporates have come in, there’s nothing. For an individual to stand tall over there, it’s difficult. You have to do your PR, run around, and they won’t give you your number of theatres. They don’t want individuals to be there. I had a tough time with my films in this past decade. You’re trying to do a certain kind of cinema, but you (don’t get the backing),” Sunny said.
“That’s what I came in for. I became a producer, a director, wearing too many hats. A man can only do one job. So I said, ‘Throw everything away, just become an actor.’ So that’s what I want to do now. Do as many films as I can as an actor,” he added.
Sunny’s father, veteran actor Dharmendra, established their production company, Vijayta Films, coinciding with Sunny’s entry into acting through Rahul Rawail’s 1983 romantic action film ‘Betaab.’ They also funded Rajkumar Santoshi’s 1990 action blockbuster ‘Ghayal,’ in which Sunny starred, and Bobby Deol’s acting debut in Rajkumar Santoshi’s 1995 romantic film ‘Barsaat.’

After his directorial debut with ‘Dillagi’ in 1999, Sunny assumed control of the production house. Following that, he helmed the production of various films including the 2001 action thriller ‘Indian,’ the historical ’23rd March 1931: Shaheed’ in 2002, Imtiaz Ali’s directorial debut ‘Socha Na Tha’ in 2005, the 2007 family drama ‘Apne,’ his own 2016 directorial ‘Ghayal Once Again,’ the 2018 family comedy ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se,’ and most recently, his elder son Karan Deol’s acting debut ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’ in 2019, which was also directed by Sunny. His latest superhit action flick ‘Gadar 2’ has been produced by Zee Studios.
