The first trailer for a new Bollywood remake of Forrest Gump has been released.

Laal Singh Chadha will see megastar Aamir Khan take on the role originally made famous by Tom Hanks in 1994 – which the latter won an Academy Award for.

Much like the US version, the movie follows a much-loved man as he recounts his life story and the challenges faced being a little different from others.

The trailer for the new version, which was released over the weekend, follows many of the familiar beats of the original, including Laal’s difficult childhood, his love for Rupa (called Jenny in the original) played by Kareena Kapoor Khan, as well as his time in war.

There is also a new take on the iconic “life’s like a box of chocolates” line, here as: “Life is just like a golgappa – your tummy might feel full, but your heart always craves more”.

Laal Singh Chadha has been directed by Advait Chandan, and was first announced back in 2019.

Speaking at the time, Khan said: “We have bought the rights from Paramount, I have always loved Forrest Gump as a script. It is a wonderful story about this character. It is a feel-good film. It is a film for the whole family.”

The movie also stars Mona Singh and Chaitanya Akkineni, and reunites Aamir Khan with co-star Kareena Kapoor Khan after their work together on 3 Idiots.

Forrest Gump was a huge success when it was released originally, and went on to take home six Academy Awards, including Hanks’s second win following a Best Actor gong for Philadelphia the year before.

Laal Singh Chadha is set to be released in cinemas on August 11.
