Featuring two of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars BabylonThe lead roles of made sense thematically as well as financially. Pete and Robbie, who starred together in Once upon a time…in Hollywood, cast actors at very different points in their careers, and Chazelle knew his stars would see echoes of their own lives in the roles. “Part of what was magical about working with them in these roles is that they each felt like they were really able to make the performance the most personal thing they’ve ever done,” he says.
Most of the characters in Babylon are fictional, although Chazelle takes inspiration from real Hollywood stars. Pitt’s character, Jack Conrad, is a hard-partying “uber-movie star,” as Chazelle puts it, inspired by the likes of John Gilbert, Clark Gable and Douglas Fairbanks: “He reaches a point in his life in his career when he starts to looks back and begins to wonder what lies ahead.” (Pete expressed a similar sentiment about his own work in a recent GQ Alibi.)
As for Robbie, she plays Nellie LaRoy, a modest aspiring actress who is a mix of early stars like Clara Bow, Jean Eagles, Joan Crawford, and Alma Rubens. Nelly is a new Hollywood transplant suddenly thrust into the spotlight, an experience that Wolf of Wall Streetbreakout may refer to. “Margot as a person has this — it’s a very Australian thing — a bold, brave, hungry thing about her that she’s really been able to tap into and do a lot of really fun things,” Chazelle says.
Calva, a newcomer to the cast, plays Manny Torres, a Mexican actor who, as an outsider in Hollywood, serves as the audience’s eyes on the world of Babylon. Says Chazelle: “In a lot of ways, he was going through a very similar experience to the character he was playing, just coming across a larger-than-life campus and going, ‘What the hell is going on?'”
